Mr. William T. Johnson, 92, had his transition on his birthday, Friday, July 17, 2009 at Candler General Hospital in Savannah, GA after a long illness.
He was born in Lincolnton, GA on July 17, 1917 to the late Ernest and Lelar Johnson.
His siblings: Lillie Mee Murray, Willie Mae Davis, McNeil Johnson, Pat Johnson, Gary Johnson, Ralph Johnson, George Johnson and Joseph Murray, preceded him in death.
Willamd T was affectionately called ""WT"" by his family and ""Grandpapa"" by his great-grandchildren.
""WT"" was educated in the Lincoln County School System and was a World War II Veteran. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 5, 1941 and served until December 8, 1945 and received an Honorable Discharge as a Corporal.
Later, he was employed by the Housing Authority of the City of Savannah in 1955 until he retired in 1982.
""WT"" and his beloved wife, the late Vernedia Rosemary Canty Johnson were united in Holy Matrimony for fifty-seven years. She preceded him in death November 3, 2002. From this union, three children were born: Melvin, Janice and Sheila.
Memories of his life are cherished by his family and friends. A devoted family is left to cherish his loving memory: a son, Dr. Melvin N. (Dr. Marcelite D.)Johnson of Nashville, TN; daughters: Janice Johnson of Savannah, GA and Sheila Garvin of Atlanta, GA; grandschildren: DeAndra J. (Gary) Cullen of Upper Marlboro, MD, Monet J. (Dr. Leotis) Bloodworth of Charlotte, NC, Ira (Takiyah) Claiborne of McDonough, GA, M. Roschaun (Phyllis) Johnson of Raleigh, NC and Sicily E. Garvin of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren: Zachary A. Bryant of Loganville, GA, Tuari N. Claiborne of McDonough, GA, Briana N., Jailyn N., and Lauryn J. Bloodworth , all of Charlotte, NC, Alaira M. Cullen of Upper Marboro, MD and Schaun C. Johnson of Raleigh, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will he held at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 1008 May Street, Rev. Wilson Scott, Jr., Pastor. Mr. W.T. Johnson will lie in state from 9:00am until 10:45am and family visitation will he held from 10:00am to 10:45 prior to the service at the church. Interment: Magnolia Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Highway 17-Silk Hope Road, Savannah, GA.
