Charles Edwin Kelly was born on October 2, 1950 to the late John & Maggie Kelly. He attended the local public schools and was a three sport athlete and graduate of Sophronia Tompkins High School where he graduated in 1969 and was later inducted into the Woodville-Tompkins High School Hall of Fame, Inc in 2009.
After graduation, he entered into Savannah State College (now University) on a basketball scholarship. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete his matriculation due to being drafted into the United States Army where he served in the 4th Maintenance Battalion CEGE. After two years of service (to include a tour in Kaiserslautern and Baumholder, Germany, Charles was honorably discharged in 1973.
Charles' first job was with Ductile Steel. His other employment includes 13 years of service at Union Camp and 15 years of service with the City of Savannah, where he retired in 2008.
Baptized at an early age at St. James Baptist Church, Charles has always had a relationship with the Lord. He was ordained as a Deacon at Central Missionary Baptist Church and later ordained as a Reverend on June 14, 2005 all under the leadership of Larry James Stell (Pastor Emeritus). He was an active member of the Sunday School and a diligent worker in the church until his sudden illness.
Charles leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted and loving wife Gwendolyn Davis Kelly; two sons Tremayne Kelly (Katrina) and Javon Chisholm; one daughter, Thea Kelly Kershaw (Darryl); eight grandchildren, Rhashida Kelly, Michael McGadney, Travon Epps, Darryl Kershaw, II (Laura), Maiya Kelly, Niyah Leavell (Gregory), Juwan Chisholm and Angel Chisholm; one Godson Ramone Mitchell (Lekeya); one brother John Kelly, Jr; one sister Elaine Hardrick (Ron); special cousins Pauline Bailey, Lester Kelly and Tommy Kelly; 3 brothers-in-law John Davis, Richard Davis and Isaac Davis; seven sisters-in-law Barbara Davis, Elishebah Benlevi, Mary Smalls, Mary Davis, Ann Mikell, Rebecca Middleton and Beverly Davis and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
