Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Matilda Thompson, 86, who transitioned on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Candler Hospital.
Adams announces funeral services for Ms. Matilda “Ms. Tillie” Thompson, 12:00 P.M., Friday, March 30, 2018 at Clifton Baptist Church.
Viewing: Thursday from 10:00 A.M.-4:00 P.M with visitation from 4:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M. in The Adams Chapel.
Interment: Cherokee Hill Cemetery.
Matilda Thompson, warmly known as “Ms. Tillie” was born January 2, 1932 in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Mr. Arthur Thompson and the late Mrs. Daisy Lovett Thompson. She was reared in Savannah, Georgia where she attended Beach High School. She later completed her GED on August 25, 1995 at the tender age of 63.
Matilda was baptized at an early age at Clifton Baptist Church. Matilda was a very active member of the church. Tillie was a lifetime member of the Sunday School Department and a member of the choir for over thirty years. Tillie served faithfully as Treasurer for many years and as the Church Secretary for 28 years.
Matilda was employed by the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education. She worked as a School Nutrition Program Assistant for more than thirty years. She also worked several summers assisting with the City of Savannah’s Summer Lunch program. She retired from the Board of Education in 1999.
Matilda realized the importance of community service at a young age. She would collect donations to purchase flowers for sick and mourning families in her community. Tillie was an excellent baker and she was well-known for her fruit cakes and pound cakes. Her family especially enjoyed her red rice, potato salad and sweet potato pies!
Tillie transitioned on March 22, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Reverend Thomas “TJ” Simmons and her devoted son, Michael Thompson. She leaves to cherish her memories, sons: Larry (Brenda) Thompson of Romulus, MI and Ronald Thompson of Detroit, MI; daughter: Loretta (John) Watkins of St. Albans, NY. A godson, E. Bruce Adams; special cousin, Louise Edwards; two life-long friends, Ethel Young and Pearl Wolfe. A special cousin, devoted best friend and diligent caretaker, Mother Delores Middleton. A daughter-in-law, Rosalyn Thompson; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
