Ms. Rita Smith Gannaway, 66, had her transition on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 surrounded by her loving family under the professional care of Hospice of Savannah.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 A.M. , Friday, April 1, 2016 in the Adams Chapel.

Rita Gannaway was born on June 23, 1949 in Savannah, Georgia to the then Josephine Smith (now Cohen) and Clarence outler. She was the first of six siblings who will always and forever be grateful for Her love, guidance and support.


Rita was educated in the Savannah Public school system, graduating from Alfred Ely Beach High School in 1967. Later she received an Accounting degree from Savannah State College (now Savannah State University). After Graduation, She worked in Atlanta, Georgia for approximately 15 years before returning ""home"" to Savannah. Gannaway was a dedicated employee of the Equal Opportunity Education Center as a family service specialist until her retirement in 2015.






In the year of our lord two thousand and sixteen, march 29th, Rita went home to take her seat at the side of the father, Jesus Christ. Death is our true great enemy - one we cannot defeat on our own. Therefore, Christ came to address the issue of death on our behalf and give us perhaps the greatest gift to mankind, hope and everlasting Life in Him.


She was survived by her loving and devoted mother and Father Mr and Mrs William and Josephine Cohen of Savannah, Georgia, son Carlton Gannaway, III of Atlanta, Georgia, Siblings: Rose Marie Outler (Ernest) of Savannah, Georgia, Eugenia D. Law (Levi) of Atlanta, Georgia, Linda Thomas (Charles), Lavinia Hopkins (raymond), wanda lee, Quetta gamble (troy) Angela M. outler (Nolan) , Clarence T. Outler (Theresa), William cohen, jr, warren cohen (janice), and Michael K. Outler of Savannah, Georgia. She also Leaves one covenant friend and dear beloved sister, Mrs. Gwendolyn lewis , of Savannah, Georgia, One grandchild and host of nieces, nephews and cherished co-workers, and the Alfred e. beach high school class of 1967.
