Innocencia Maria Houston
Innocencia Maria Figueroa Houston was born on October 10, 1931 in Atlantic City, NJ to Carlos and Reno Martin Signet
Figueroa. She was a vivacious and engaging child who was a top student at Our Lady Star of the Sea Regional School.
Innocencia led a life of Love, Family and Service. She would go on to start her career in New York City joining the staff of
(HARYOU-ACT) Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited with the goal of increasing job opportunities for minority youths while
decreasing juvenile delinquency in central Harlem. There, she met her husband of 17 years, Charles E. Houston, Jr. and they
wed in 1966. The loving couple would have two children Traci and Todd, born in 1967 and 1970, respectively.
In 1973, the Family moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina when the island had one Big Star grocery store, two traffic
circles and no public transit. Innocencia adapted immediately, learning how to drive as an adult, wearing flip-flops in the
winter and becoming the head Administrative Assistant for the newly opened Hilton Head Island Elementary School.
In 1980, the Family moved to Summerville, South Carolina and Innocencia immersed herself in her new community,
becoming a football Team Mom, PTA member and a health professional for many years at the Department of Disabilities,
Hillside Care Facility.
Innocencia’s main joy in life was her Family and her Lord. She was a devoted Mother and devout Christian. Additionally, she
was an avid cook, a meticulous housekeeper, and, as a general rule, one known to be very steadfast in her principles. She
was compassionate, wise and at ease with Life and herself. She was held in high esteem by her Mother & Father-in-law, Rev.
& Mrs. Charles E. Houston Sr.; spending time with “Pop-Pop” discussing lessons from the bible and learning many of Nanna’s
favorite food recipes.
Innocencia was on the Missionary Board of Trueway Missionary Baptist Church and church Mom under the pastorate of Rev.
Brian R. Hunt.
Innocencia was predeceased by: her Parents, Carlos and Reno Martin Signet Figueroa; and her eldest Daughter, Leslie
Doggett of Washington, DC. She is survived by two children: Traci Lynn Houston of Savannah. GA; and Todd Edward Houston
(JD), of Katy, TX. Also mourning her loss are former spouse, Charles E. Houston, Jr., beloved grandchildren Walter Houston
Jones, Madison Maria Houston and Victoria Marie Howell Houston of Katy, TX; sisters-in-law Cornelia Houston Hall (John),
and Jeanne A. Houston; nieces, Alexandria E. Wright, and Nicole R. Callahan (JaMell); nephew, Maurice R. Wright, Jr.; great
nieces London and Brooklyn Callahan, and a great nephew, Cairo Callahan.
The Family of Innocencia Houston, would like to share their sincere thanks and appreciation to everyone for the many acts
of kindness and support extended to them during this period of mourning.
