Ms. Gladys Welch Bess, 85, had her transition on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 under the excellent and professional care of Hospice Savannah surrounded by her loving family.


Funeral services for Ms. Gladys Welch Bess will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church located 1085 Ossie Davis Pkwy Waycross, GA 31501.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., Friday, July 8, 2016 at Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church.

Viewing will resume beginning 11:00 A.M., at the church on the day of the service.

Interment: Hazard Hill Cemetery, Waycross, GA.



OBITUARY:
The funeral for Mrs. Gladys Bess, a longtime resident of Waycross, Georgia, will be held at 1p.m., Saturday, July 9, 2016, at Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, 1085 Ossie Davis Parkway, Waycross, Georgia.

She died Wednesday, June 29, 2016, surrounded by her loving and devoted family at the Hospice of Savannah.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service.
Interment will be in Hazard Hill Cemetery.

She was educated in the Atkinson County Public School System where she attended Atkinson County Training School. She met and married Mr. Willie Roy Bess, Sr. on May 17, 1947. To this union seven children were born; five boys and two girls.
She was preceded in death her parents, Ellia and Roephenia Welch, grandparents, Cain and Florence Cooper, two son, Willie Roy Bess, Jr. and Dwight Carnell Bess, Sr., and an infant twin brother, John Henry Cooper. Also, reared as siblings were Roosevelt Armstrong, Algertha Robbins and Gwendolyn Scott.


She was well respected, loved, and cherished by the ""Canyon Community.""
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Rev. Ralph Cain (Faye) Bess and Tommie Luther Bess, of Port Wentworth, Georgia, Rickey DeWayne (Avon) Bess, Cheryl Lynn (John) Kitchen, and Winder Jean (John) Strickland, of Waycross; 22 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren; a half- brother, Otis (Jewel) Welch, of Waycross. Also reared as siblings, Jake Armstrong of Dallas, Texas and Bernice Thrope of Jersey City, New Jersey; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
