Ms. Essie Mae Stewart Johnson, 63, had her transition on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Candler General Hospital.
Funeral service for Ms. Essie Stewart Johnson will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., Friday at Tremont Temple Baptist Church.
Interment: First African Baptist Church Cemetery located 1709 Barrington Rd. Riceboro, GA 31323.
OBITUARY: Essie Stewart Johnson, 63, transitioned October 17, 2015 at Candler General Hospital. She was born January 9, 1952 in Savannah, Georgia to Deacon Frank and Marion Stewart. She is a graduate of Alfred Ely Beach High School, Class of 1969 and graduated Cum Laude from Savannah State College and Georgia Southern University. A beloved and well known educator in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, Johnson touched many lives through the halls of Beach High School, her revered alma mater, where she returned to teach for over 25 years. Additionally, she worked tirelessly as an advocate for quality Public Schools as President of the Chatham Association of Educators, National Education Association Director as a Representative from the State of Georgia and served as President of the Georgia Association of Educators.
Johnson answered her call to the Gospel by becoming an ordained minister at Tremont Temple Baptist Church. She let her light shine as the Superintendent of Christian Education, was instrumental in reviving the Women's Home Mission and was a featured lecturer on the weekly Prayer Line at her church.
""EJ"", as she was affectionately known, inspired many with her zeal for learning, her zest for life and her compassion towards others. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her sons, Calvin F. (Kelly) Oxendine, III of Ellenwood, Georgia and Carlos S. (Portia) Johnson of Savannah, Georgia; her mother, Marion W. Stewart of Savannah, Georgia; her sister and caregiver, Gladys A. Stewart of Savannah, Georgia. Two nieces, Renee' Stewart Baucum of Prince George, Virginia and Yolanda (Paul) Coaxum of Savannah, Georgia. Three grandchildren, Keslyn Oxendine and Calvin F. Oxendine, IV of Ellenwood, Georgia and Suri Johnson of Savannah, Georgia. A grandniece, Chardonnay L. (Larawl) Williams of St. Mary's, Georgia, two grandnephews, Dwayne M. Baucum of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and Dante' J. A.R. Baucum of Prince George, Virginia and a great-grandnephew, Jarred E. Zeigler, II of St. Mary's, Georgia ; a special cousin (sister), Mrs. Shirley Mitchell of Savannah, Georgia; and a host of cousins, relatives and other friends.
