Adams announces the passing of Mr. William Cohen, 89, who transitioned on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
William “Al” Cohen entered eternal rest on March 24, 2021. Al was born on April 17, 1931 the eldest of seven children born to the union of the late Hammond and Viola Cohen.
Al was educated in the New York public schools. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Korean conflict. After a short military career, Al was honorably discharged and returned to New York City where he held various position until finding his niche in the United States Postal Service. After relocating to South Carolina, he initially held a position at Low County General Hospital and later became a serial entrepreneur running several businesses.
As a child Al fellowshipped at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church in New York City, after relocating to Pineland, SC he attended Gillison Branch Baptist Church. Upon moving to Savannah, GA he attended the First Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church where he was ordained a Deacon in 2002. In his latter years, Al’s faith grew tremendously as he became ever closer to God.
Al loved his family and gave to them unselfishly. He had a laid-back personality that did not diminish the fire within. Al enjoyed his hobbies and interest which included putting together puzzles, gardening, cooking, and having game nights with family and friends.
For the last 35 years, Al was married to Josephine Cohen of Savannah, GA. Together they shared his six children Linda Thomas, Lavinia (Ray) Hopkins, Wanda (Michael) Governor, William Cohen, Jr., Warren (Janice) Cohen, and Quetta (Troy) Gamble and her five children Rose Marie (Ernest) Baker, Jr., Angela (Nolan) Merriweather, Eugenia Law, Michael Outler, and Clarence (Teresa) Outler. Al is survived by his loving brother Lawrence J. Cohen (Savannah, GA), two sister-in-law’s, Vergia Cohen (Pineland, SC) and Dorothy Cohen (Savannah, GA) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Adams announces the Funeral Service for Mr. William Cohen, 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 30, 2021. Interment: Good Hope Church Cemetery. Public Viewing at the Funeral Home via our Drive Thru from 4:00 - 6:00 P.M., Monday, March 29, 2021.
