Adams announces funeral services for Mrs. Verna Drayton which will be held 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Clifton Baptist Church located 100 Big Hill Rd. Garden City, GA 31408.
Interment: Magnolia Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Mrs. Verna Drayton was born in Little Rock, AR on December 22, 1932 to Author Brown and Lena Mount. Verna and her siblings moved to Richmond, CA and she became a member of the Berkeley Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and joined the Usher Board.
VERNA met and married Benjamin Drayton, in California, and they purchased a home in Berkeley, CA, residing at 919 Hearst Street. They raised her five sons, Louis, Larry, Michael, Kenneth and Richard, to be active members of the church. She also encouraged her son’s to join the Military and all, except Richard, served the Army, Navy and Air Force.
VERNA made a deal with Benjamin that after they raised her son’s, and they all left home, that she would move to Savannah, GA to be closer to his family. In 1980 they moved and built the house at 450 Big Hill Road, Garden City, GA. There she joined the Usher Board at the Clifton Baptist Church and was a current member until her passing.
VERNA worked in California as a licensed cosmetologist for many years. In Georgia, she was employed as a Supervisor for the Washington Holding Company and was honored in 1984, to win a Grandfather’s clock for making outstanding sales achievement.
VERNA enjoyed gardening and cutting the grass on her riding lawn mower; she also loved to Crochet, Sew and make quilts.
VERNA’S proudest achievement and joy was to raise and instill Christian values in her, long desired daughter Zaria, born in 2000. Her prayer to the Lord was to let her see Zaria graduate from high school, which she did in 2019.
VERNA was a devoted Christian woman and gave praises to the Lord every day. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, aunt and friend.
VERNA was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Drayton and son’s Larry, Michael and Richard; and siblings, Georgia, Cora, Jessie, Cleveland, James, Ada and Willie. She leaves to cherish her memories three children, Zaria, Louis and Kenneth, Nephew Jess Brown as well as 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren and a host of friends.
