Mrs. Sallie Mary Johnson Samuel was born February 7th, 1923 to the late Mrs. Maggie Lena Cuttray Johnson and Mr. John Walter Johnson in Liberty County. Sallie Mary Johnson Samuel entered into eternal life on July 12th, 2020. She was surrounded by her loving and devoted family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Samuel, her two sons William Jr., and Andrew Samuel Murchison. Her grandson Melvin B. Samuel, her sister Elmira Davis, her two sisters-in-law Dorothy Wright and Ruby Wright and her brothers Alonzo Johnson, Eliroy Johnson, John W. Johnson, and A.C. Johnson.
She was baptized at an early age and later became a faithful member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church now known as Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church.
Sallie Mary Johnson Samuel was raised on a farm, where she did everything except plow and ride horses. She enjoyed going to church; her family would travel to church and to town by horse and buggy.
Sallie was educated in the Liberty County School system. She was a cheerleader and a member of the basketball team as a point guard. She was employed by the Chatham County school system in her early life and later worked for Dr. Rollins, she retired from the Savannah Nursing Registry where she was a faithful employee.
She was interviewed last year by WJCL TV regarding her husband on Veteranʼs day. She was interviewed twice by WSAV TV after President Barack Obama won his first election, and again during this past yearʼs Black History month. She was one of the featured historian during Black History month at St. Thomas More Catholic School in Decatur, Georgia. The students displayed her life in pictures and biography. Sallie Mary Johnson Samuel along with her Aunt Marie were the first African American women to register to vote in the county, and encouraged many African American women in her county to register to vote. She said in her interview that as African Americans we have worked hard, but there is so much more to be done, and we need to continue to work. She lived to witness her children have children and instill morals and values into their lives to grow as she did.
She leaves to mourn two sons, William M. Samuel Savannah, and Charles G. Samuel (Regina) Jenks, OK, five daughters, Shirley Samuel Murray (Glenn), Debra M. Samuel, Maggie Samuel Harper (John) Stone Mountain, GA, Catherine Samuel Herron (Bert), Savannah, GA and Teresa Samuel Stockbridge GA. One sister Deorn Johnson Anderson, Columbus Ga, devoted niece Elizabeth Davis Swinton, two devoted nephews William B. Wright (Sandra) and Robert Wright, Savannah GA, Goddaughter Mrs. Inez Famble, Godsons Mr. Tony Overton, Mr. Arthur Famble Sr., Mr Arthur Famble Jr., and Mr Dennis Famble. Her special church families in Savannah, GA. The Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, Father Robert Channey, Pastor and in Atlanta, Chief Apostle Marion E. Johnson and Senior
Bishop A. Ralph Johnson, and to her dedicated caregivers Mrs. Natasha Baldwin and Ms. Lula Sweet. She also leaves Twenty-Seven grand children, forty four great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
