Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Rebecca Bonds Bowens, "Sula" 72, who transitioned on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Adams announces the Funeral Services for Mrs. Rebecca Bonds Bowens, "Sula", 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Temple of Glory Community Church.

Visitation: 5-6p.m. in the Adams Chapel.

Interment: Sweetfield of Eden Cemetery.

OBITUARY:

Rebecca “Sula” Bonds Bowens was born in Savannah, Ga., on April 24, 1946, to the late James Bonds Sr. and Elise “Gal” Sams Bonds.  She was the first born of eight children.  She is preceded in death by both parents and two brothers, James “Dickey” Bonds Jr., Johnny “Ras” Bonds and one sister Gwendolyn Bonds.  On March 6, 2019, God whispered to her “I will give you rest” and granted her angel wings.

Rebecca, fondly known as “Sula” or “Beck,” was baptized at an early age at First Beulah Baptist Church in Savannah, Ga under the leadership of Reverend Freddie Bonds where she sang in the choir.

She was educated in the Chatham County public school system.

She wedded Marion “BoBo” Bowens and gave birth to four boys, Lionel “Tim”, Marion “Jerry”, Henry “Hank”, and Rafeal “Ralph”.  The family left Savannah and moved up north to Boston and New York for many years before moving back to Savannah, Georgia.

Sula was a faithful employee for many years at Bethesda Home for Boys, Hill Haven Nursing Home, and Charter Hospital before opening her own business called Sula’s Restaurant.

Sula was a very talented, bubbly, witty, kind-hearted and boisterous woman.  She took pride in her cooking and the ability to serve people. She never met a stranger. She served deviled crabs at Flamingo Park, Sportsman Park and Soldier Field. She loved to entertain the young and the old.  She was always the life of a party.  She had a very distinct voice that could be heard anywhere that came with a beautiful smile. She was a very outgoing person who would give the shirt off her back and open her doors to anyone in need.

Rebecca leaves to cherish her memory her four (4) sons Lionel “Tim” Bowens, Marion “Jerry Bowens, Henry “Hank” (Beverly) Bowens, and Rafeal “Ralph” Bowens, All of Savannah, GA; 1 stepdaughter- Darlene Haynes (Anthony) Wright, Vidalia, GA; Four (4) brothers – Solomon (Carla) Bonds, Savannah, GA,  Cyrus (Juanita) Bonds, Hallandale, FL.  , James Bonds and Anthony Bonds, Savannah, GA; two (2) sisters, Shirley WIngster and Lynn Street, Savannah, GA; 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; 2 cousins Genell Gibson and Mary Ann Baker, God daughter – Tanika Peal; 1 brother-in-law, John Henry Haynes Jr.; 1 sister-in-law, Barbara Skinner; and a host of nephews and nieces; 1 adopted son, Keyodist Irving; Three (3) Lifelong friends, Myra Preston, Paulette Brown, Theresa King.
