OBITUARY
Jacqueline Joyce Brown was born on January 27, 1951 in Burton, SC. She was the first child of John and Gertrude Brown. Jacqueline was educated in the Beaufort County public school system, graduating from Robert Smalls High School in 1969. She attended Johnson C. Smith University and graduated from Savannah State College (now University).
She met and married the love of her life, Norman B. Elmore, Jr., who preceded her in death in 1991. Jacqueline enjoyed a career as an educator, sharing her love of children and scholastic achievements in classrooms at Most Pure Heart of Mary, St. Peter’s and St. James Catholic schools. She eventually left the classroom to work for Chatham-Savannah Youth Futures Authority, as she was passionate about being a part of its collaborative effort to enable children to become self-sustaining adults. Her work continued outside of Savannah, and as a part of local community initiatives, all with the same aim of advocating for children who, through no fault of their own, did not have access to the things most take for granted.
Jacqueline was dedicated to making her community a better place to live, and she demonstrated such through her efforts as a devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She loved the sense of sisterhood, and sought to advance initiatives involving social action, supporting local youth, and general acts of kindness. She enjoyed traveling, photography, reading, and bringing people together for the better. But most of all, she loved God and her family.
Jacqueline was also preceded in death by her sister, Meredith Marie Brown and her father, John Brown. She leaves to mourn her children, son Damon Elmore and daughter Meredith Elmore; her grandchildren, Noah Lloyd, Simone Elmore, and Ava Elmore; her mother, Gertrude Brown of Burton, SC; a brother, Jerl (Darlene) Brown of Camp Spring, MD; a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and a number of other close family members and devoted friends including a sister-in-law Clara Elmore Bain; dear cousins Kenneth Doe and Constance (Wilbert) Washington and devoted friends Lula Baker, Kimberly Newbill, Myra Pope, and Barbara Reid.
Jacqueline was a peaceful woman of God. She never hesitated to lend her talents, time, or uncanny diplomatic manner to make a difference in the many lives she touched. She was truly one of a kind, and anyone who knew her was likely enriched by having her in their lives.
