Mrs. Dorothy Frazier Phoenix passed away peacefully on Friday, May 8, surrounded by her family. She was 90 years of age.
Mrs. Phoenix was born on September 21, 1929 in Clyo, Georgia to the late Butler and Mabel Shoults Frazier and moved to Savannah as a young teen. She graduated from Beach-Cuyler High School. After high school, she married the love of her life, James P. Phoenix, Jr. To their union was born four children; James Ellis, Floyd Eric, Dorothy Lauretta, and Verlene Anita.
Mrs. Phoenix was a dedicated member of Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully. She was actively involved with the Choir and a member of the Deaconess Ministry. She loved to sing gospel songs. She attended numerous National Baptist conventions with church members and enjoyed traveling to the various states. She also loved to travel with family and friends.
Prior to her illness, Mrs. Phoenix was an active member of the Frist African American Masons Lodge in Georgia known as the Prince Hall Masons; Hilton Lodge #2 and Order of the Eastern Star. Savannah is the birthplace of the Prince Hall. She served in several official positions within the Order of the Eastern Star for many years. Her favorite organizations were the Imperial Court Daughters of Isles and the Order of the Golden Circle. Her husband served as the District Deputy Grand Master. They both enjoyed the fellowship and community service contributions provided by their organization commonly known as the Hilton Masonic Lodge, located at the old Gwinnett Street site.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James P. Phoenix, her son, James Ellis, her parents, Butler and Mabel Frazier, seven siblings; Andrew, Butler, Bernice, Laura, Garlee, William , and Richard.
Mrs. Phoenix leaves to cherish her memory three loving and devoted children; a son, Floyd Eric (Shelia) , Brunswick, GA, two daughters , Dorothy Lauretta Phoenix , Savannah, GA and Verlene Anita (Nathaniel) Tilson, Kennesaw, GA. She also leaves one loving brother, Rev. Dennis (Gwen) Frazier; a devoted grandson, Pierre Richey, Savannah, GA, two granddaughters NaCole (Demetrius) Wilson, Matthews, NC and Natalie Tilson, Kennesaw, Georgia, two great grandsons, Harper and Houston Wilson, Matthews NC., a loving Godson, Deryl Berry, New Port News, VA., and a host of loving nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
A special thank you to a devoted grandson Pierre Richey, a very devoted nephew and niece, Jimmy (Barbara) Johnson, Hospice of Savannah, and All Hours Private Duty Nursing, as well as a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives ,and friends.
