OBITUARY:

SAVANNAH - Sadie Davis Steele, 103, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2014 at Savannah Cottage Chatham, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born September 10, 1911 in Savannah, Georgia to Charlie Calhoun Davis and Mamie Rogers Davis. Mrs. Steele celebrated a milestone about which few of us dare to dream - 103 years old.

As a young child she attended Emma Swangon Private School, Cuyler Primary and Elementary Public School, and graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville, Florida. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Teacher Education from Georgia State College, now Savannah State University and later earned her Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education from Columbia University in New York.

Her teaching career and passion for educating young people spanned over thirty years. Her unique gifts as a teacher in the Savannah Chatham County Public Schools earned her many awards. She was voted Chatham County Teacher of the Year several times, and she received the Georgia State Teacher of the Year honor.

Mrs. Steele was very active in her community and gave valuable service to numerous organizations, including: Goodwill Industries of the Coastal Empire, Inc.; Economic Opportunity Authority; King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation, where a garden has been named in her honor; National Education Association; March of Dimes; American Cancer Society; Tuberculosis Association; Savannah State University Alumni Association; Cuyler-Brownville Neighborhood Association; Haven Home Alumni Association; and Delta Theta Sorority, Inc. - Savannah Alumnae Chapter, where she served as president 1958-1960

A lifelong member of Bunn Memorial Baptist Church, which she truly loved, after 80 years of service, she continued to attend church regularly until her death. She served as the pianist, Sunday school teacher, Chairman of the Trustee Board, and a member of several other boards. When she was recognized for more than 50 years of service, the Bunn Memorial Baptist Church Annex was built and named the ""Sadie Davis Steele Annex"" in her honor.

When asked about her secret to longevity, her response was always, ""Put God first and always treat others how you would like to be treated. Her final words were always, ""I will trust in the Lord... To God Be the Glory!""

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Calhoun Davis and Mamie Rogers Davis, and her loving husband, Clarence Steele.
She leaves to mourn her passing a host of relatives, godchildren and close friends.
We extend special thanks to the entire staff at Savannah Cottage Chatham, Hospice Savannah, and special friends who so lovingly cared for Mrs. Steele in recent years.
