Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Mary Williams Bennifield, 92, who transitioned on Friday, September 15, 2023 at her Residence surrounded by her loving family.
The Matriarch
Mary Williams Benniefield was born on October 24, 1930, in Midville, GA to the late parents Pearl Harden & Floyd Williams. In Midville she enjoyed the country living with her grandparents & cousins who she loved dearly. She loved working in the gardens and fields as a young girl while attending Burke County Public Schools. While in Midville Mary met (late)Joseph Benniefield Sr. she became his bride for eternity on November 4, 1951. During their union they started their family with two children Eddie & Curtis Benniefield while still residing in Midville, GA.
Mary & Joe moved to Savannah, Ga in 1953 were they decided this is place they would consider Home and extended their family with seven more children Plonnie, Joise, Hattie, Pamela, Diane, Joseph Jr, and Angela. Mary enjoyed caring for her children and cooking large dinners to satisfy her children and other children of the Cuyler- Brownville and Cann Park neighborhoods.
Mary caring and naturing spirit continue to be implemented in chosen work by working with children at Kicklighter Academy and Julettie Low Girl Scouts. She took most pride in her career with the Byck Family where she was employed for more than 30 years making their Family as her own. She retired fully from the Byck Family at the age of 78-year-old.
Mary Benniefield became faithful to attending Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church and joined as a member under the leadership of Rev. Carter where she demonstrated her love for the Lord by her participation around the church. Mary was apart of choirs, Deaconess board, Missions, Sunday School and Baptist Training Union. She enjoyed visiting the sick & shut in and other churches with her faithful partners Sis. Wright and Sis. Henry. She loved her Church but Loved God and his Son Jesus the most. If you were at her house during the time of any church service, you were going to church with her rather if it was in your plans or not. She became the Mother of the Church in her late years which influence her more to be present in the House of the Lord.
Mary loved her family time cooking, share her wisdom, morals, and values to past to her next five generations. She loved facetime and calling her family to make sure they were Doing What’s Right! Mary love holidays and decorating the table to match each holiday season. Mary would be missed for her sharp mind and ability to say a joke to make everyone laugh. Mary through it all wanted everyone to just Love one another.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Benniefield Sr and five children Eddie, Curtis, JR, Hattie and Diane.
She leaves behind her legacy of six children Plonnie Benniefield, Josie ( Harry) Newton, Pamela Holliverse, Angela Wright , Robert (Lucille)Golphin and Annie Kate (Charles) Manker. One sister Delores James , one sister in law Zelma Bennett, three daughter in laws Patsy Benniefield , Bennie Ruth Benniefield and Tonia Benniefield. She leaves a legacy of 29 Grandchildren, 72 Great Grands and 24 Great- Great Grands and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
