Mrs. Mary Ellen Jones

Mrs. Mary Ellen Jones, 86, had her transition Saturday, May 30, 2009 in Avon, CT. with her devoted son and other family and friends by her side.

A native of Philadelphia, PA, she spent the majority of her life in Savannah, GA. She was a retired high school teacher where she taught Home Economics at Sol. C. Johnson High School in Savannah, GA for thirty-two (32) years.

Sister Jones was a loving person.
She was for real and leaves behind a legacy of love. Those who knew her well would say, ""To know her, was to love her:. Her faith and her love of God were paramount in her life. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, NJ, where she sang in the Calvary Choir, a member of the Missionary Noon Bible Study, Season Citizens, and attended Sunday School Class #2.

Health problems prevented her from participating, but she loved Calvary and always thanked God for bringing her to New Jersey.

She also attended the Blessed Hope Baptist Church in Houston, TX. and was a Deaconess for four (4) years. She was also a Deaconess at Second African Baptist Church in Savannah, GA for fifteen (15) years, and was President of the choir.

She was a loyal and dedicated member of the Savannah Alumni Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Soroity, and also a member of the Georgia Vocational Association.

She earned her BA Degree from Benedict College in Columbia, SC and her MS from Stout State College in Menomonis, WI. She also attended Penn State and Georgia Southern College Graduate School for additional certifications.

Her husband, Roger Jones, Sr., an Educator and Principal in Savannah, GA., preceded her in death.

She leaves to celebrate and cherish her memories, son, Roger Jones, Jr.; two grandsons: Maurice Jones, Roger Jones, III and his wife Tina; two great-grands: Jade Jones and Jason Jones; goddaughter, Cynthia Melbourne; three sisters-in-law: Ruth Sizer, Grace Sizer and Delores Handy; two brothers-in-law: Wendell Waters and Rufus Handy; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Jones family would like to express thanks to her special frieds and care giver, Sandra Bradley.

Funeral service will be held 11:00am Friday, June 5, 2009 at Second African Baptist Church,123 Houston Street in Savannah, GA., Rev. C. McGill Brown, Pastor.

Family will received friends from 10:00am to 11:00am at the church prior to the service. Interment: Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery in Savannah, GA.
