Profile of Life

Mrs. Mary Lee Cannady-Snyder

""This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all"" (1 John 1:5) .

On September 21, 1943, in Savannah, Georgia, God's gift of a fifth child, Mary Lee Cannady, was born to the late Mr. Cornelius and the late Rev. Rosa Lee Cannady. Mary was one of nine children; three of them, Cornelius, Isaiah, and Delores preceded her in death.
`
Mary was a very attentive and astute student. She matriculated in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and in 1961 graduated from Alfred Ely Beach High School where she became a high stepping majorette, and a soloist in the choir. She was also a member of the New Homemakers of America. After graduation, she worked towards a degree at Savannah State College (University) for a while.

In an effort to pursue additional career options, Mary relocated to California for a few years. While there, she was blessed with two beautiful daughters.

Later on, she returned to Savannah and married Tommy Snyder on May 29, 1987. They were married for several years, but parted their ways in the midst of her failing health.

Mary was always a very giving and loving person, and she was always supportive of family. If you needed anything from her, she would sacrifice to give it to you. While growing up, her happiest times were when she sang with the Cannady Sisters and accompanied them on the piano at various church and civic functions within the Savannah community.

At an early age, Mary confessed Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Townsley Chapel AME Church. She was a faithful member who attended church and Bible Study, sang in the Junior Choir, and eventually became a Sunday school teacher. Due to her waning health, she attended church intermittently throughout the years.

God's plan to comfort Mary began on Friday, February 5, 2016. Mary's nurse informed her daughter, Denise, that her mother said, ""I've seen the light."" At 7:00am on Super Bowl Sunday, February 7, 2016, she followed that light and slipped away peacefully while asleep. It was at that moment that Mary was no longer in pain and no longer suffering, but was transitioning from this earthly realm into a heavenly realm.

Mary's memories will forever be in the hearts and minds of her two daughters; Denise O'neal and Della Gray (Donald); two grandsons, Tavon O'Neal and Tavares O'Neal; one granddaughter, Imani O'Neal ; five sisters: Olivia Rosborough (Jesse) of Harlingen, Texas; Pearl Thomas (Walter) of Valrico, Florida; Geri Lewis of Savannah, GA ; Rev. Rose Jones (Johannes) of Atlanta, GA; Rev. Flory Ward of Savannah, GA, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
