Mrs. Martha Johnson

April 13, 1941 — January 24, 2024

Savannah, GA

Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Martha Johnson, 82, who transitioned on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at her residence.

Martha Geraldine Johnson, a beloved and spirited soul, departed this world on January 24, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on April 13th, 1941, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the great Dorsey and Mary Melton. Martha was a woman of resilience and humor, leaving behind a legacy that resonates through the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

She had one sister, Deloris Johnson of Norfolk, Virginia, and they loved talking junk to each other and showing out; you couldn't tell them anything, and you  better not do anything to either of them or you would end up getting fussed out by the other. She attended public schools in North Carolina and eventually met and married her second husband, the late Alford Johnson of the United States Navy. From this union, they were blessed with a complete family of two girls and two boys. Though the eldest, Carmazine Lyndell McPherson, preceded her in death, Martha is survived by her loving children: Annette Lorraine Johnson of Ladson, South Carolina; Delton Andre' Johnson (Wendy) of Pooler, Georgia; and Alford Tyrone Johnson of Seattle, Washington.

Martha and her family traveled throughout the East Coast with her husband until his retirement. After retiring, they lived in Rhode Island until his death in 1995. She then moved to Seattle, Washington with her son Tyrone for a while. Then she relocated to Virginia to live with her daughter Dell until Dell's passing, and then to Pooler, Georgia with her oldest son Delton, where she lived until her passing.

Martha enjoyed meeting new people and playing BINGO. She would often say, "I'm going to dot me a number!" as if it was her job. She was also a skilled welder for Quonset Pointe, in Connecticut, where she eventually retired. She also had three bonus sisters: Eleanor Tavares of Fall River, Massachusetts, Betty Pye of Virginia, and Rosalind Smith of Delaware. She would have a great time with any of these bonus sisters; they could be heard playing cards, sipping Pepsi, and laughing, talking about the craziest things. Martha had a special love for her family, particularly for her cousins Kevin (Michelle) and Daryl (Joy). They're playful teasing, bouncing her between them due to her height, became a source of endless laughter and precious memories.

Aside from her sister and children, Martha leaves behind her grandchildren Marquis, Andre' (Karonda), Shaun, Ashley (Alphonzo), Nicole (Reginald), Tasheem, Elexis, Ayana, Jasmine, Donanvan, Jolan, Delton Jr., Delvaughn, and Delvina, as well as her bonus grandson Jose and a slew of great-grandchildren and still counting. Plus more bonus nieces and nephews, from near and far, on whom she has left a mark of love in some way. Especially Vikki, Chucky, Bug, and Kena.

As we reflect on Martha's life, let her favorite sayings bring comfort and smiles to our faces: "WHAT YOU SAY!!!", "THAT'S A FACT JACK!!", " YES SIR BOSS MAN!!", and "DON'T YOU EVER STAY GONE AGAIN!!" Martha Geraldine Johnson's impact will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her. May she rest in eternal peace.
