Obituary:
Mrs. Louise Cooper Edwards, 99, of Savannah, Georgia passed away on April 24, 2016 peacefully at home surrounded by loving family and friends. Louise was born on August 25, 1916 in Screven County to the late Ms. Annie Lou Cleveland and Mr. Lee Cooper. She had one brother, William Battey, who would precede her in death. Louise met and married the late Mr. Hilliard Edwards, Sr. on May 18, 1940 in Savannah, GA. She would have four children: Ollie Mae Edwards, Bernice ""Bunnie"" Edwards, Hilliard ""Papa"" Edwards, Jr and Priscilla Edwards, whom all preceded her in death.
Louise's early education began at the Church Day School in Millhaven, GA. She furthered her early education after moving to Savannah, GA with her family at the Training School which was located on the campus of Savannah State University (then named Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth). As she matured and became ready to enter the workforce, Louise began the early years of her employment as a caregiver for the Benton family (Benton's Moving Company) and for the family of J.C. and Nancy Lewis (J.C. Lewis Ford and Other Philanthropic Endeavors). From there, she would go on to work for Tideland's Mental Health Facility for 27 years up to her retirement.
Louise was a life-long, dedicated member of Connor's Temple Baptist Church, where the Rev. Terrance Burrell was her Pastor. She joined under the pastorship of the late Rev. Bennie Mitchell, and has been a loyal and active member ever since. Her faithful commitment and love for her church and her church family was no secret to all who knew and loved her, and she was so proud to call Connor's Temple her home.
Louise was blessed to live a long, fulfilling life shared by those who loved her most. Her nurturing spirit has touched and shaped many lives, and her loving presence is one that will truly be missed by all. She had a wonderful sense of humor and an honesty that she did not mind sharing; and she loved her family and her church with everything within her.
Louise is survived by: her daughter-in-law, Leatha Edwards (the late Hilliard Edwards, Jr) of New York; four grandsons: Ali Edwards, Hasoni Edwards, Kewannie Edwards, of New York; and Kalee Edwards, Sr of Savannah; and a host of great-grand children, great-great grand-children, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. And special thanks to the Stone, Scott, and Williams families.
