Mrs. Loretta H. Miller

Mrs. Loretta H. Miller, 79, had her transition on Friday, September 30, 2016 at St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Loretta Levaughn  Hagins Miller was born January 12, 1937 to the late Henry Frank Hagins, Sr. , and Rubye Statham Hagins in Statesboro, Georgia. Loretta attended Florence Street Elementary School in Savannah, and graduated from A. B. Davis High School in Mount Vernon, New York. She matriculated at Savannah State College - received a baccalaureate degree in English, in 1962, and a master’s degree in education there in 1972. After graduation she served as a social worker with Savannah’s  Department of Family and Children Services from 1963 to 1972. She married Edward G. Miller, Sr., June 8, 1959, and to this union was born one son – Edward G. Miller, Jr. They celebrated fifty years of marriage in 2009. She was an ardent life-long member of Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church where she was ordained a deacon on January 6, 1974. She also received an award from the church for her outstanding work with youth members on April 19, 1970 at the Twelfth Annual Evangelism Program.  After several years working at Family and Children Services, she began a twenty-five year career at Georgia Regional Hospital working in  the Department of Child and Adolescent Services and retired there as the unit’s director.

Loretta was a gregarious and caring person who was active in social and community affairs. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc. and the Daintettes Social Club for over fifty years. Additionally, she was an Archousa of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule’); a Wolverine of the Wolves Club, Inc.; a Falconette of the Falcons Club; and an Alphabette of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Loretta was very attentive to her son Eddie when he encountered health problems over an extended period. She was known as an excellent culinary artist by her family and friends. She was a chic and stylish dresser who was meticulous about her appearance. Loretta frequently spoke to Eddie about the history of Savannah and the overall welfare of African Americans.

She was beloved by her family and leaves to cherish her memory: Edward G. Miller, Sr., her loving husband, and Edward G. Miller, Jr., her son, whom she loved dearly. Sister – Pamela Hagins Butts (Michael – deceased); Brothers – Harold Kenneth Hagins (Debbie) and Gregory Hagins (Debbie). Her brothers Gerald Hagins and Frank Hagins, Jr., preceded her in death. She also has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.

Funeral services for Mrs. Loretta H. Miller will be 11:00 A.M.,Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church, Rev. Don Johnson, Officiating.

Interment: Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery.
