OBITUARY:
Kinereth Louise Stubbs was born on January 17, 1945 to Bernice and the late Earnest G. Fife in Harlem, New York.
Having accepted Christ at the age of 8, Kinereth became a member of the Abyssinian Baptist Church, where she was baptized. She attended Sunday school regularly with her younger sister Jacqueline, and had very fond memories of Rev. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. As a teenager, she served as an Usher in the Vestry until age 17. As an adult, she enjoyed attending the 9 am worship service and cherished her Sunday morning chats with her pew mates whom she considered part of her extended family.
Kinereth received her education in the New York City public school system. She graduated from Seward Park High School in Manhattan and received both her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from the City College of New York.
Although she was not a sports fan, one of her favorite pastimes as a teenager was playing handball with her sister in Saint Nicholas Park. It was at the handball courts that she met a handsome young man by the name of Reuben Stubbs, Jr. in 1961. After dating for eight years, the two were married on June 29, 1968 at Abyssinian Baptist Church and from their union came one beloved daughter, Aja B. Stubbs.
Kinereth taught at the Jacob H. Schiff Elementary School (P.S. 192) in Harlem for 34 years. Teaching was her passion and she truly enjoyed her days teaching kindergarten through third grade. Among her fondest memories was being able to teach the offspring of her students whom she taught very early in her career. She was also grateful to serve as a mentor to many young teachers as they began their careers in education until she retired in June 2001.
Upon her retirement, Kinereth became active in her community. She served as Recording Secretary of the Thruway Homeowners Association for several years. She also served as Vice President of the 47th Precinct Community Council. In addition, she was an active part of the United Federation of Teachers and their retiree program and received several awards in recognition of her community service.
Traveling was one of Kinereth's favorite activities in her spare time. Her countries visited included Canada, Mexico, Spain, England, France, Italy, and numerous Caribbean islands.
Kinereth called The Bronx, New York home for nearly 40 years before she and Reuben moved to Rincon, GA in 2009. While living in the South took some getting used to, she quickly created a routine for herself. She enjoyed spending Mondays playing Bingo as well as her time spent at the Effingham County Senior Citizens Center. Every Tuesday and Thursday, she looked forward to her exercise class and chatting with her friends in the ceramics room.
Her faith in God continued to the South as she worshipped with her ""home away from home"" church, the Richmond Missionary Baptist Church of Port Wentworth, GA. She grew fond of Pastor Eugene Barney, Jr. and enjoyed her chats with Sister Crystal Merriman and Sister Lillie Mae Johnson, who became two of her dearest friends in Georgia.

Kinereth passed from this life on January 28, 2016. She leaves to mourn her mother, Bernice L. Fife of New York, NY; one sister, Jacqueline Fife of New York, NY; beloved husband, Reuben Stubbs, Jr. of Rincon, GA; one daughter, Aja B. Stubbs of Rincon, GA; one sister-in-law, Vernita Riddle (Theodius) of Savannah, GA; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
""Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.""
- Proverbs 31:30-31 (NIV)
