Mrs. Johnnie Mae Spaulding

Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Johnnie Mae Thompson Spaulding, 81, who transitioned on Monday, December 4, 2017. 

Mrs. Johnnie Mae Thompson Spaulding was born March 25, 1936 to the late Mr. Richard Thompson and Mrs. Constance Edwards Thompson of Savannah, Georgia.  She was educated in the public schools of Chatham County graduating from the Alfred E. Beach High School in 1953.  She entered Savannah State College (now Savannah State University) where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.  Johnnie Mae furthered her training at Armstrong State University where she received a Master of Arts Degree in Library Science.  Her quest for excellence in her field led to her receiving certification as a Media Specialist from the University of Georgia, at Athens, Georgia.

She retired after many dedicated years of service to the students of Chatham County.  Johnnie Mae met the love of her life, Mr. Chester Spaulding and they were united in marriage until his death in 1999.   Mrs. Spaulding was actively involved in the cultural, social and civic aspects of the community.  She was a member of the Hungry Man’s Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of The Baron’s Social Club, the Mutualettes Club, the League of Women Voters and the Alpha Theta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Johnnie Mae was a devoted member of St. Matthew Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the choir, Daughters of the Cross and former member of the Board of Director for the Pre- School Program. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Richard Thompson and Mrs. Constance Thompson-Hixon, her husband, Mr. Chester Spaulding, two brothers, Mr. William Green and Mr. Xenophone Hixon Jr., and one sister, Mrs. Louise Thompson.

Johnnie Mae is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mildred (E.W.) Ponder of Ft. Lauderdale Florida, Mrs. Hettie F. Copeland of Augusta, GA, and Ms. Leatha D. Hixon of Jacksonville, Florida, several nieces, nephews, cousins, a loving godson Mr. Dewayne Cope and a host of sorrowing friends.            

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 11, 2017 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church located 1401 MLK Jr. Blvd. 

Interment: Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery. 

Viewing will be held from 12:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M., Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the funeral home.
