On August 29th, 1955, Jacqueline “Jacqui” Crawford was born to Geraldine Smallwood Crawford and John Bryant, Sr. in Savannah, Georgia. Born to be a harmonizer and mediator, she was the beautiful baby girl who would unite the Crawford, Bryant, Young, and Lafure families for decades. Her mother died when she was seven years old, and Jacqueline was then raised by her aunt Bernice (Corine) Young. Jacqueline, her siblings, and cousins were members of Connors Temple Baptist Church and sang in the Savannah Mass Choir.
Jacqueline worked extremely hard, learning the discipline and care-taking skills that would yield success throughout her life. She attended Windsor Forest HS, and Richard Arnold HS, where she graduated as President of her senior class. At seventeen years old, she married Joe Daniel Green, III, and they had a precious son named Joe. She served as President of the Garden Homes Tenants Association, worked at a nursing home, and studied social work at Savannah State College. Nine years after Joe was born, Jacqueline had a beautiful daughter with Sylvester Alexander whom she named Kahdeidra. Shortly thereafter, in search of a better life, Jacqueline and her two children moved to Hollis, Queens and then Brooklyn, NY. However, Savannah would continue to be “home.”
New Yorkers can be tough, but Jacqueline had a penchant for disarming them with her Southern hospitality and superb cooking skills. She made the absolute best macaroni and cheese, candied yams, deviled crabs, and potato salad with shrimp. She loved entertaining and connected with people from all nations, eventually meeting and marrying Osmond Glen Johnson, who was a native of Jamaica. For many years, she was a beloved and valued employee for the Municipal Arts Society where she donned several hats. Later in life, she returned to her social service roots where she coordinated services for families in shelters for CAMBA. She joined St. Paul Community Baptist Church, was active in the Hospitality Committee, and enjoyed volunteering with East Brooklyn Congregations.
It remains no secret that Jacqueline adored her two children and sacrificed all that she had for them. She instilled the values of independence and education in her children, leading both to become college educated entrepreneurs. Every accomplishment they had was motivated by and dedicated to her. Jacqueline was an avid collector of elephants and art by African American painters. She delighted in taking pictures and traveling with friends and family, especially to places where she could enjoy the beautiful beaches.
After a long illness, Jacqueline succumbed on August 28, 2016, the day before her 61st birthday. Anyone who has had the privilege of looking into her eyes, beholding her smile, or hearing her laughter knows that Jacqueline was an angel on Earth. With a pure and clean heart, she has clothed, fed, bathed, chastised, hugged, kissed, and encouraged multitudes of God’s children from Savannah to Queens, Brooklyn, Jamaica, Haiti and back again. What a mighty and merciful God to have given us a chance to know Jacqueline in our lifetime.
Jacqueline was preceded in death by her mother, father, step-father Charles Crawford, Sr. , and brother John Roosevelt Bryant. Left to cherish her wonderful spirit are her son Joe D. Green, IV and daughter Kahdeidra M. Martin-Thelusca (Hermann); grand-children Cheyenne Green (and mother Antoinette Norris), Donté and Andre Green (and mother Vernitha Grimes), and Hermanica Thelusca; brothers Charles Crawford and James Bryant; sisters Cozella Abramson and Patricia Worthy; step-siblings Olivia Jenkins, Spring Laflure, Adrian Lafleur, and Derrick Lafure; very dear close cousins, the Martin family, and a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and loyal friends.
