Mrs. Edwina Arnold, 93, transitioned on Friday, April 28, 2017 under the excellent and professional care of Hospice Savannah.
Born to the late Matilda Marshall in Savannah, Georgia on July 21, 1923. Edwina was raise in a loving home with her grandparents, Catherine Gaines Marshall and John Marshall. She attended schools in Chatham County and received further training in Kosher food preparation in Beaufort, SC. Edwina was an excellent cook. Her employment included work at Georgia Infirmary Hospital, the first hospital in the United States for African-Americans. She continued a history of caring for others.
Edwina was married to the late Louis Arnold. They lived in The Grove Point area of Georgetown.
Edwina was a family-oriented person and very proud of her family. She was the niece of Fred H. Gaines. She assisted in genealogical research and coordinating the first Fredrick Habersham Gaines Family Reunion, held in 1986, which was attended by 200 people.
Baptized in the Holy Spirit at a young age, her family's legacy was instrumental in forming
St. Philip Monumental AME Church. As a member of St. Philip AME Church, Edwina's Christian service was exemplified by her volunteer service to the elderly and sick and shut-in ministry.
In retirement, Edwina resided at The Williams Court Apartments, where she socialized and received visitors and friends.
Edwina was preceded in death by her siblings; Theodore White, Katherine Nettles and Anna Gary. She leaves to cherish her memories; Theodora White Bradley(Fred) of Charlotte, NC, Anna White Dobbs of Burlington, NC, Annette White Pryor(Virgil) of Charleston, SC and Fred C. White(Teresa) of Alpharetta, GA. Also, Adrienne Bradley White(Joseph), Karen Bradley Steward(Michael), Marlin Pryor, Deric Dobbs, Jimmie Dobbs, Michael Dobbs, Terence White, Tyler White and a host of loving cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, May 4, 2017 St. Philip A.M.E. Church.
Viewing will be held from 1:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M., Wednesday at the funeral home.
Interment: Laurel Grove Cemetery.
