Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Dorothy Faye Michael ,87, who transitioned on Sunday, May 12, 2024 at home.
Ms. Dorothy Faye Michael was born to the late Walter and Saddie Mae Ellison on March 27, 1937 in Geneva, Georgia.
On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2024 our Merciful Heavenly Father called her home to rest after a life well lived.
The eldest of 7 children, she moved to Savannah, Georgia at an early age where she met her husband of 28 years Leander Michael. To this union they had three children, Toland, Kim and Deborah. Having gone by many names over the years, she was commonly known as Faye. Others affectionately called her Moby, Mama Faye, “Mom”, Granny, Ms. Moby and Shorty Red. However, she was happiest with the titles Mom and Granny.
Dorothy was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, now Resurrection of our Lord Catholic Church for more than 6 decades.
She was once very active in the church as a member of the Council of Catholic Women and sang in the choir. She also participated in numerous fundraisers to support the church and loved being a part of all the events as well.
While always putting God first, Dorothy made a point of attending Mass regularly with her family on Sundays and often throughout the week. She worked hard to make sure that all three of her children had a private Catholic school education (kindergarten thru 12th grade) and participated in many other extra curricular activities in and outside of school.
She, along with her husband worked small businesses in the Hudson Hill, West Savannah and Bay Street areas for many years.
Then, for several years, Ms. Michael did private nursing in-home healthcare in the Savannah Community. Later going on to work 15 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a nursing assistant. She was well loved by her co-workers, many became lifelong friends, as well as her patients.
She took great pride in her work and her appearance, wearing a crisp white freshly pressed nurses uniform and hat with white stockings and shoes. All while never getting a spot on them and always giving her patients the best
possible care. Preparing delicious, mouthwatering meals for her family and friends, even at a moment's notice, was another of her many gifts. Deserts like pineapple pie, pineapple cake and sweet potato pies to name a few. Extravagant feasts during the holidays made from scratch as if effortlessly, with recipes that have gone down to her daughters and granddaughter.
Ms. Michael enjoyed traveling and cruising with her friends. As well as touring all over Europe when visiting her daughter Deborah when stationed there while serving active duty in the Army. The gift of a green thumb brought Dorothy simple pleasure. She loved flowers and growing plants on her beautiful front porch, where you could often find her sitting and waving to the neighbors or putting out bird food for them to enjoy. Then while at her dining room table looking out the window
to see the birds when they’d come perch at the feeder. She liked listening to her albums and playing and listening to music of all kinds. She could even be coerced to dance if the mood suited her.
Until her illness began, as a prayer warrior for Christian Women’s Connection Stonecroft Ministries, Dorothy looked forward to attending their luncheons every month at Carey Hillards. It gave her great joy being with the ladies of the group and she would get dressed up for the meetings. The 85 yr old ministry is in over 45 countries and they help in leading lost
women to Jesus. But most of all she loved her family and friends from all over the country,
even the world. Being a big sister, an auntie, a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother was all a great reward to her and she was treasured by them all.
Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings Lester Harris Jr, John Ellison, and Barbara Ann Williams
Dorothy is survived by her loving children who were devoted to taking care of her during her extended illness Toland Michael I, Kim Michael Polote, retired Sgt. Deborah G. Michael all of Savannah, GA. Her siblings Prophetess Shirley Leonard and Pastor Lorraine Harris of Columbus, GA; one brother Willie Harris of Columbus, GA. She also leaves to cherish her memories, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces, cousins and other relatives and a profound number of loving friends over the years.
Rites of Christian burial will be held 10 AM Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Resurrection of our Lord Catholic Church located 112 Fell St., Savannah, GA 31415.
