Adams announces the passing of Mrs. Bertha Jaudon Pinkney, 88, who transitioned on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at her residence.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M., Monday, November 27, 2017 at St. Mary's A.M.E. Church located 2088 East Gwinnett St. Savannah, GA 31404.
Bertha Jaudon Pinkney, a resident of Savannah, died on November 19, 2017 at home, in the Montgomery Community were she was born and raised, on Whitefield Avenue. She was at the home of her daughter, Vaughnette Goode - Walker, under Hospice Savannah Care.
Mrs. Pinkney led by example as a Christian, parent, teacher at Tompkins High School for 30 years and an after school volunteer at the Frank Callen Boys Club. A member of St. Mary’s African Methodist Episcopal Church, she was very active, before her illness, in the church and the community. She also a member of the Charms Inc. and served as past president.
Mrs. Pinkney was born at Montgomery on September 14, 1929 to Reverend Hampton and Annie Bell Jaudon. She was married to the late George Pinkney. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Anna Bell Speed.
Survivors: Daughter, Vaughnette Goode - Walker (Leithland), Sister, Elizabeth Jaudon Ladson (Atlanta). Fred V. Goode (New Jersey). Sister - in - laws, Madie Pinkney, (Washington, D.C.), Cassie Williams, (Savannah, Ga.), Naomi Brinson, (Virginia). Family friend, Joann Shuman Jones (Savannah, Ga.) and a host of cousins.
Bertha Jaudon Pinkney was born, September 14, 1929, in Savannah, Georgia, at Montgomery, the daughter of the late Reverend Hampton and Annie Bell Jaudon. She was educated in the local public schools and graduated from Morris Brown College, in Atlanta, Georgia, with a degree in Home Economics. After college she married the late Fred V. Goode and her daughter, Vaughnette Goode - Walker is from that union. For a time she lived in Montclair, New Jersey and returned to Savannah to begin her career as an educator.
Mrs. Pinkney was preceded in death by her late husband, of 35 years, George Pinkney.She was a Home Economics teacher at Tompkins High School for 30 years and after retirement worked at the Frank Callen Boys Club with the After School program.
Mrs. Pinkney was active in the local chapter of the Morris Brown College Alumni and a member and past president of the Savannah Charms, Inc. During her lifetime, she received many awards and certificates for her social and civic work.
The proudest time of her life seemed to be the years she spent working untiringly at St. Mary’s A.M.E. Church where her father, Reverend Hampton Jaudon, had pastored. “Sister Pinkney” traveled many miles doing church work with the Youth and Adult members of St. Mary’s. She attended workshops and conventions helping to assist in the Christian molding of their lives. Mrs. Pinkney was a delegate to the 6th Episcopal General Conference and was very active in the Lay Organization.
Mrs. Pinkney was a constant caregiver of family and friends. She always had a beautiful smile and kind word to encourage positive and wholesome living. She was a peacemaker.
Mrs. Pinkney aged gracefully and reached her 88th birthday. She still had a great sense of humor. If you were around her and seemed a little down, she would smile and say: “Don’t worry, be happy.!”
