OBITUARY
Beatrice M. Capers was born in Ridgeland, South Carolina on June 5, 1925 to the late Arthur Jones and Alberta Primus Jones. She moved with her family to Savannah, Georgia at an early age. She matriculated in the public schools of Savannah, Georgia, graduating from Beach Cuyler High School in 1943.
On October 13, 1949, she married Deacon James Capers, who preceded her in death. Their union was blessed with 3 children, Gloria, Sandra and Henry Bruce.
Beatrice worked as a Unit Secretary at Memorial Medical University Hospital before retiring. Upon retiring, Bea decided to become an entrepreneur, and became an independent Home Interior Designer.
Throughout her life, Beatrice saw the value in helping others, whether it was cooking for her family, or a complete stranger, it didn't matter to her. Her home was a place of refuge, not only for members of her family or friends of her children, but also for those in need, whose names she did not know. She would feed anyone who she felt needed a meal. Everyone felt like family in her presence. Bea had a gift for making you feel loved.
As an active member of the First Union Missionary Baptist Church for over seventy years, Beatrice put her hospitality skills to good use. She served as President of the #1 Usher Board for 5 years and president of the Deaconess Board over 25 years. She was one of the first ladies to be appointed to the Trustee Board in 1963, by the late Reverend Pete Braxton. Rev. Braxton also appointed sister Capers to the History Committee for the Church's Centennial Anniversary. Beatrice served as Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and coordinated the arts and crafts fair. She was a member of the church mission, organized the first Nursing Gill, one of the founders of the FUMBC Pageant, and she started the church's Food Bank.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her 3 brothers, Henry Jones, Sydney Jones, and Isaiah Jones, and 2 of her sisters, Nellie Thomas and Eva Overstreet.
She leaves to mourn, her daughters: Gloria Capers of Atlanta, GA., and Sandra Capers Tanner (Calvin Sr.) of Augusta, GA; her son: Henry Bruce Capers (Michelle) of Aiken, SC; her sister Rose Marie Bosley of Savannah, GA; her grandchildren: Calvin (Ray) Tanner Jr. US Navy, Desmalyn Tanner of Atlanta, GA., Megan Tanner of Augusta, GA., Dezmen Capers of Aiken, SC., and Shana Wiggins of Atlanta GA., her sister-in-law, Amelia Jones of Savannah, GA, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
