Adams announces the passing of Mr. Nelson W. Collins, Sr., 72, who transitioned on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 in Chester, PA.

Adams announces funeral services of Mr. Nelson W. Collins which will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Fairmont Baptist Church located 721 E. Bolton St. Savannah, GA 31401.

Interment: Greenwich Cemetery.

OBITUARY:

Nelson William Collins Sr. was born on January 17, 1948 to the late Lillie Mae “Betty” Williams. Nelson was the oldest of two children. His sister Ronell Collins Short preceded him in death.  Nelson was educated in the Chatham County School District in Savannah Georgia-graduating from Sol C. Johnson High School in 1966. After graduating from high school, Nelson was drafted into the United States Army to fight in the Vietnam War. Nelson was a soldier in the 101stAirborne Division stationed in the Ashau Valley of Vietnam. Nelson received several military awards while in Vietnam including the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, and National Defense Service Medal.

After returning from Vietnam, in 1969 Nelson married his childhood sweetheart, the late Berthine Laverne Reese and moved for a brief period to Fort Collins, Colorado-eventually making Chester, Pennsylvania their home where they would go on to raise a family. From this union, two children were born- Nelson Collins Jr and Kevin Collins.

Nelson was employed by Allied Chemical, in Claymont Delaware, for over twenty years before retiring in 1993. Nelson was a hard worker- working the swing shift for many years to support his family. He worked in several capacities during his tenure with the company.

Although Nelson created a good life with his family in Chester PA, away from the beautiful Magnolia Trees in Savannah Ga, he often spoke about missing home. He was a true “country boy“ trapped in the city. He frequently spoke about how he longed for some boiled peanuts, Dixie Lilly peas, and a good ole rack of ribs.

Nelson will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his two children Nelson Collins Jr. (Danyelle) of Bear Delaware and Kevin Collins Sr(Diane) of Reading Pennsylvania, six grandkids, Christian Collins, Brandon Collins, Nelson Collins III(Tre) all of Bear Delaware, Ashani Collins of Coatesville PA, Brielle Collins, Kevin Collins Jr. both from Reading PA, his sister-in-law, Evone Stephens, mother- in law- Loretta Reese- Harris,a brother-in-law, Harvey Reese(Contrena) from Powder Springs GA, niece, Tiffany Garrett (Anthony), nephew,  Trey Stephens, Uncle, Leroy Douglas(Willie Mae), and a host of nieces and nephews, all from Savannah Georgia, a brother- in law- Andre Short Sr., niece, Cashaunna Short, nephew, Lamont Short, all from Huntsville Alabama, a nephew Andre Short Jr. from Cincinnati Ohio.
