Adams announces the passing of Mr. Alfonza Jenkins, 71, who transitioned on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
OBITUARY:
Alfonza Jenkins was born March 27, 1948 in Ridgeland, South Carolina to the late, Mrs. Elizabeth Jenkins-Cannick and was raised by his special mother, Celia Jenkins.
Alfonza was educated in Ridgeland, South Carolina and attended Ridgeland High School. Unbeknownst to him, he met his future wife, Lucille Osgood while their opposing schools were playing football.
Alfonza moved to New York, NY at the tender age of 15 to be with his mother, Elizabeth. He worked alongside his mother at St. Vincent’s Hospital in NYC. Soon thereafter, Alfonza was promoted to Maintenance Supervisor.
On July 5, 1975, he married Lucille Osgood. They had two children (Demetris and Sabrina); he also has a son (Carl) from a previous relationship.
Alfonza was affectionately known as “FOX” for being a sharp dresser. He lived in Manhattan and Bronx, New York for many years. He enjoyed laughing and making others laugh, watching sports, good food, and discussing politics with his daughter. He moved to Savannah, Ga in 2009 to be near his daughter and lived here until his passing, February 15, 2020.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Jenkins-Cannick and brother James Otis Cannick.
Alfonza is survived by his wife, Lucille O. Jenkins of Savannah, GA; his children, Carl (Diane) Fripp of Simpsonville, SC, Demetris Jenkins of Long Island, NY, and Sabrina (Larry) Bryant of Savannah, GA; his brothers, Deveraux (Yolanda) Cannick of Mount Vernon, NY, George (Louise) Cannick Jr of Bluffton, SC, Anthony (Inette) Cannick of Ridgeland, SC, Eric (Sylvia) Cannick of Bluffton, SC, Bernard Jones of Baltimore, MD; his sisters, Shirley Camacho-Keith of Bluffton, SC, Rose Lee Barnwell of Dundalk, MD, 8 grandchildren, including his first grandchild, Shanequa Jenkins of Savannah, GA, 5 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Adams Funeral Services, Inc. Savannah, Ga on Saturday, February 22, 2020 by Pastor Larry Bryant, Sr. at 2pm. Interment will follow in the Bonaventure Cemetery. Repass will be held at St. Benedict the Moor Parish Hall in Savannah, Ga immediately thereafter.
