Mr. William Phoenix

August 8, 1938 — April 10, 2017

Mr. William Phoenix, 78, had his transition on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Candler Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

“So close to God that there is no wind between us”.

William "Bill" Phoenix, son of the late Edward & Viola Phoenix was born August 8, 1938 in Savannah, GA, and was a 1957 graduate of Thompkins High School. As a deacon of First Union Missionary Baptist Church he served faithfully as an ambassador for Jesus Christ. He sang in the adult choir, served on the trustee board, and as Assistant Sunday School superintendent. Never afraid of putting his hands to the plow both physically and spiritually, he worked faithfully without complaining. He retired in 2012 from ConGlobal Industries after 34 yrs as a depot manager. But most importantly he labored in the vineyard for Christ, being a Noah of this time, compelling all he could to come into the ark of safety. Like Abraham, he was full of faith. Like Joshua, his house served the Lord. Like Sampson, he was a man of strength and courage. Like Job, he prayed for his family daily. He was a counselor and trusted confidant.

He had an entrepreneurial spirit and enjoyed eating butter pecan ice cream, peanuts, although it made him sneeze :), and drinking Pepsi; playing the drums; admiring the night sky; watching old westerns, Family Feud, and college football; and he liked the color blue.

When he finished his course and left for his heavenly mansion on April 10, 2017, he left as a humble, wise and wealthy servant. Humble, because he was teachable and had been chiseled by trials; wise because he studied to show himself approved; wealthy because he had a quiver of born-again children.

Bill was preceded in death by his siblings Charles Phoenix and Martha Hall. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted and loving wife of 29 yrs, Betty Jean Phoenix, whom he affectionately called "Dr. Honey Bunny", sister Eloise Phoenix, (Savannah, GA), brothers Edwin Phoenix (Brockton, MA) & James Phoenix (Delores) of Savannah, GA; his children: Sheila Phoenix, Dr. Debbie Hagins (Greg), both of Savannah, GA, Cassandra Washington (James), William Eric Phoenix (Nicole), both of Atlanta, GA. Dorsenia Hendrix, Thena Gibbs (Odarie), both of Savannah, GA, and William Eloridge Phoenix of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren Petra Hamilton (Carl), C. Adam Davis (Kacy), Raquel Page (Tony), Dionna Davis, Marcus Washington, Aaron Washington, Tatyana Reeves, Javere Reeves, Devonn Raymonville, Bella Phoenix, Sophia Phoenix, Deandre Gibbs, Kaynekka Smith (Ernie); Great grandchildren Jakim Robinson, Leighera Blair, Camia Hamilton, Kaley Davis, Ernie Smith, Kalen Smith, and a host of in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces, spiritual children, and friends.
