Ulysses Edward Battey, affectionately known as "Uly," 80, of Savannah, GA, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025. He was born in Savannah, GA, on July 26, 1944, to the union of Isaac Battey and Wardell Battey.
Uly accepted Christ at an early age and carried his faith throughout his life. At the age of 16, he moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he started his life as a New Yorker. At one point during his life, he worked as a security guard at the iconic Apollo Theater. Uly retired from the garment district in 1989 and returned to Savannah in 1990, where he became an active member and deacon at Zion Hill Baptist Church. One of his favorite hymns was "His Eye Is on the Sparrow."
Uly was an avid lover of music and the life of every gathering. His energy, enthusiasm, and infectious personality made him a beloved figure to all who knew him.
He leaves behind his cherished wife, Monica Y. Murchison-Battey of Atlanta, GA; his children, Shaun Battey of Long Island, NY, Tonya Arnette of Charlotte, NC, and Ashante Clay (Cameron Roberts) of Atlanta, GA; his siblings, Isaac Battey Jr. (Jean Battey) of Brooklyn, NY, Charles M. Battey of Savannah, GA, Blonda Battey-Holley (Van Holley) of Savannah, GA, and James R. Battey (Christine Battey) of Savannah, GA; grandchildren, Eric, Quiana, Jamela, Calise, Justin, Jeannette, Catharyn Watts-Battey, and Hallelujah Roberts as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Alfred L. Battey, and his sisters, Mozel Battey-Coles, and Izetta Battey-Wright.
Ulysses will be deeply missed by all who loved him, but his legacy of love, joy, and faith will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
