Mr. Roscoe W. Riley, Sr., 87, had his transition Friday, December 14, 2012 surrounded by his loving family and care takers at home under the excellent and professional care of Hospice Savannah, Inc.
Christian Rites of Burial for Mr. Roscoe W. Riley, Sr. will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Sacred Heart Church located 1707 Bull Street in Savannah, GA.
Internment: Catholic Cemetery.
Public viewing will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 beginning 9:00 A.M until 6:00 P.M. with Omega Services and Rosary Rites at 6:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Mr. Riley, Sr. will lie in serenity at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of the service Saturday.
OBITUARY
Roscoe Walker Riley, Sr. was born May 25, 1925 in Anderson, S.C. and departed this life on December 14, 2012. He was one of six children born to Harry William Riley, Sr. and Susie Walker Riley of Anderson County, S.C. Until his illness, he was a faithful and devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Savannah, GA.
He received his early education in the public schools of Anderson County, S.C. Roscoe continued his education at South Carolina State College (now University) and earned a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Industrial Education.
His undergraduate studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. He served in both European and South Pacific Theaters and attained the rank of sergeant. He received an honorable discharge after having served for three years.
While matriculating at South Carolina State, he met and later married his college sweetheart, Helen Elwood Stokes. To this union, a son, Roscoe Riley, Jr. was born. Helen preceded him in death on April 22, 2012.
Roscoe taught industrial education for more than 37 years in the public schools of North Carolina and Georgia. He spent most of his career at Alfred E. Beach High School where he taught for more than 36 years in Savannah. In addition to his professional life, he was a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated for sixty plus years, The Knights of Columbus and the Mules (Savannah Chapter).
He leaves to mourn his Passing, a devoted son, Roscoe W. Riley, Jr. of Savannah: three grandchildren, Harry C. (Sabrina) Riley, Sr. of Savannah, Helen J. Riley of Stone Mountain, GA and Racine M. Riley of Savannah; two great-grandchildren, Master Harry C. Riley, Jr. and Little Miss Kayla Riley, both of Savannah; one sister, Mrs. Mattie Riley Bracey of Chevy Chase, Maryland; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Roscoe W. Riley, Sr. will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Sacred Heart Church located 1707 Bull Street in Savannah, GA. Internment: Catholic Cemetery. Public viewing will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 beginning 9:00 A.M until 6:00 P.M. with Omega Services at 6:00 P.M. followed by a visitation until 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Mr. Riley, Sr. will lie in serenity at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of the service Saturday.
