Percy Vandella Williams II, a graduate of the University of Georgia and the University of Georgia law school, and former legislative counsel in Congress, died on Sept. 14, 2017, at the age of 56. Percy, the fifth and last child of educators Russell and Alma Williams, was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and raised in Savannah, Georgia. He was an alumnus of Sol Johnson High School. After law school, Percy worked in Washington, D.C., for Congressman Lindsay Thomas as legislative counsel. Later, he traveled the country as legislative analyst and spokesperson for the Society for Human Resource Management, easily commanding attention with his stature – 6’8” –and his brilliant mind. He returned to Georgia in 1997 to work as a corporate counsel for Apple South, Inc. Percy was well-known for his practical and insightful professional advice. His professional life included serving as counsel for several developing businesses, consultant to the Georgia Conference of Black Mayors, project manager for Driven Engineering, and Vice President of the Rockdale County (GA) Bar Association. In 2017, Percy decided to contribute his fluency in Spanish, legal expertise, and courtroom skills to the work of the immigration law firm, Jennifer Alonso and Associates. In 1992 Percy married his sweetheart, Sandra (Moore), “Sandy.” Their marriage was blessed with two children, Rachel and Brian.Percy was also an avid and accomplished pianist, who, along with his wife, loved playing, composing, and arranging. Percy and Sandy taught music -- and their love for that medium -- to their two children. Percy’s friends and family knew him as a dedicated friend, husband, and father who showered everyone near him with quality time, bad jokes, and love. Above all else, he will be remembered as an amazing man of God.He is survived by his wife, Sandy, his children, Rachel and Brian, his sister, Estelle Williams Crenshaw (Wes), and his brothers Russell and Kenneth Williams, and a host of other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory. His parents and another brother, Julian Williams, predeceased him. His memorial will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Savannah, Georgia, at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Sponsors of New and Talented Artists (SONATA), Inc., a charity started by Percy’s mother that provides music lessons for children whose financial situations would not allow them to learn music otherwise.
