OBITUARY:

Louis Preston McLendon Sr. was born August 3, 1922 in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Reverend C.J. McLendon and Alberta Canty McLendon. His three brothers, Joseph, Wilbert, Willard, and one sister, Etta Oglesby, preceded him in death. The family relocated to Savannah. He was educated in the Chatham County Public Schools, attending Alfred E. Beach High School and Savannah State (University).
Louis was married to Doretha Mincey McLendon and have five children.
Louis served in the U.S. Army in the Chemical Warfare Division, serving in France and Italy (the European Theatre) and was awarded many medals of recognition. He was honorably discharged. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 41 years. After retirement he enjoyed gardening, and was an active member of Feiler Terrace Neighborhood Association, the VFW and the American Legion Post 500. He served as a past vice-commander.
Louis loved God and found a lifelong church home at St. Philip A.M.E., his beloved church, where he was an active trustee and staunch supporter.
His wife, Doretha was the love of his life. Their beautiful life together was exemplified in 71 years of union. If you wanted to get along with “Mac;” as he was affectionately called by many, don’t mess with “Doe” (Doretha). He sincerely loved his family and enjoyed reunions, cook-outs and achievements of each family member. He had sage advice for all.
He leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife of 70 plus years, Doretha V. McLendon, four sons, Louis P. (Bonnie) McLendon, Jr., Lorenzo Miller, Alphonso (Darvina) Miller, Michael (Della) McLendon, Sr., and one daughter, Jacquelyn (Paul) Bush; grandchildren: Preston III (Roena), Brianna, Melinda (Terrance), Paul Jr. (Jasmin), Andre’, Erika (Kyle), Michael Jr., Courtney, Pierre (Devri), Vonnie, Wendell and Sierra. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Jackson, as well as a host of great-grands, a great-great grand, nieces, nephews, godchild, Jeffrey Burroughs and many other relatives and friends.
