Mr. Leo A. Watkins, Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on November 21, 2024, at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center in DC. Born on January 16, 1960, in Washington, DC, Leo was a resident of various communities throughout his life, including San Antonio, TX, and Savannah, GA, where he dedicated himself to both his family and career in the automotive industry.
From his early years, Leo demonstrated a profound affinity for mechanics. He grew up working on engines, which eventually led him to a rewarding career as a mechanic. Leo honed his skills in well-known establishments such as Montgomery Wards and JC Lewis Ford, earning respect and admiration for his meticulous work. His dream was realized when he accepted a position at Cummins, where he specialized in Hemi engines. However, shortly after beginning this chapter of his professional journey, he faced a life-altering medical diagnosis that would challenge him for over four decades.
Leo was a steadfast fighter, living with Crohn’s Disease. Despite the challenges it presented, he remained an insightful and adventurous spirit, continually finding joy in life and cherishing moments with his family. He spent 20 meaningful years with his wife, Catherine Williams, raising their children across the triad of Washington, DC; San Antonio, TX; and Savannah, GA. Their journey together began in the 7th grade at Kramer Junior High School, and together, they created a family rooted in love and support.
In his later years, Leo took great pride in his role as a grandfather. He is survived by his daughters, LaTyce Jones of Savannah, GA and Katrina Dorsey (Roscoe) of Hagerstown, MD; and his youngest son, Leo Watkins, Jr. (Jessica) of San Antonio, TX. His grandchildren, Tadjanique Phillips and Kamarie Jefferson of Washington, DC, Quadiare London of PA, Malique Watkins of Atlanta, GA, Iyanna Houachissi (Regis) of Columbus, OH, Sgt. Jalen Roper of Seattle, WA, Keyona Keyes, Kayla Keyes, and Kiyare Keyes of Hagerstown, MD, and Layne Watkins and Landry Watkins of San Antonio, TX. All of whom will carry forward his legacy.
Leo is also survived by his siblings: Theodore Watkins, Andre Watkins (Cynthia), David Watkins, Keith Watkins, Deborah Sutton (Willie), Jessie Watkins, and Juanita Dixon (Ron); in addition to a host of nieces and nephews, his special brother Rick Hunt, and his significant partner, Constance Turner.
He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Brian Michael Jefferson, his mother, Gertrude Watkins, his father, Shelton Watkins, Sr., as well as his sisters Bridgette Watkins, Sylvia Toney, and LaVerne Saunders, and brothers Phillip Watkins and Shelton Watkins, Jr. He also mourned the loss of two nephews, Shelton Watkins III and James Dunn, Jr.
Leo's life was marked by his unwavering commitment to family, love of adventure, and insights into the world around him. As we celebrate his memory, we remember a man who faced the trials of life with dignity, humor, and grace. His spirit will forever resonate within the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.
