He was educated in the Shawnee County Public School System, but left during his senior year to join the United States Air Force at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas.  After completing Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he received his GED.  His first duty station was Eielson Air Force Base, Fairbanks, Alaska. His next tour would take him to Hunter Air Force Base, now Hunter Army Air Field (HAAF), in Savannah, Georgia. After completing four years in the U.S. Air Force in December 1966, he continued his career with the Department of Defense, as a Federal Civil Service Firefighter at Hunter Army Airfield as a crew member, crew chief, rising to the positions of station captain, and Assistant Fire Chief. While at HAAF he furthered his education at Savannah State College as a VEEP student in General Education. He retired in 1995, after thirty-two years of total service with the Department of Defense.

After retiring from the Federal Government, he took employment at his church of worship, Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church in Savannah, Georgia as sexton for over 16 years. As an active member in his church, he served on the Men’s Council as secretary and treasurer for over fifteen years. He also served on the Usher Board, Chairman of the Trustee Board, and was very active on numerous committees and auxiliaries at the church.

In June 1966, Jack met Maxine Jones, a junior at Savannah State College.  After a brief courtship, Jack proposed and the couple entered holy matrimony, officiated by the late Pickens A. Patterson, on September 2, 1966, and from this union two sons and a daughter were born.
