Eugene Phoenix was born on December 25, 1940 in Savannah, GA to the late Rosa Lee Phoenix and Albert Meyers. He was the grandson of the late Mrs. Mary Jane Campbell. He gained his heavenly wings on June 30, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones.
Mr. Phoenix spent his childhood in Savannah. He relocated to New York City and graduated from the High School of Fashion Industries in 1959. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1960. He was honorably discharged in 1964 and became a U.S. Merchant Marine. In 1969, he returned to Savannah and married Mildred B. Hicks. Their union was blessed with three children. He then worked at Hunter Army Airfield and was their first African-American HVAC technician. In 1982, he started his own HVAC business, Quality Air Tech, Inc., which he operated for over 40 years. Through his company, he mentored and employed a multitude of young men in the community for decades.
Mr. Phoenix was previously an active Prince Hall Mason, Hilton Lodge No. 2, and a past president of the Waldorf Civic and Social Club. Since 2007, he served on the Chatham County Board of Equalization.
Mr. Phoenix was a member of True Light Pentecostal Church, serving faithfully as a Senior Deacon and as a member of the Praise Team and Prayer Ministries.
Mr. Phoenix had a cheerful and inviting personality and made friends wherever he would go. He enjoyed the arts, as shown through his love of singing, writing poems, listening to music, and even once starring in a one-man play. His jovial laughter and positive spirit will be missed.
Mr. Phoenix was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruthie M. Rivers of McDonough, GA. He is survived by his three children: Ava Phoenix of Jacksonville, FL, Bernadette King (Jarvis) of Marietta, GA, and Eugene J. Phoenix (Chenay) of Savannah; four grandchildren: Eric Phoenix, Jordan King, Brooke King, and Brandon King; brother, Leroy Phoenix of Decatur, GA; a sister, Christola Phoenix of New York, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
