Mr. Elijah “Coach” McGraw, Jr., aged 81, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2016 at The Manor House of Savannah.
Funeral services for Mr. Elijah McGraw, Jr. will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 10, 2016 at St. Paul CME Church located 1601 Barnard Street, Savannah, Georgia. Rev. Da’Henri Thurmond, Pastor/Eulogist.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00 P.M.-7:30 P.M., Friday, September 9, 2016 in The Adams Chapel.
Interment: Bonaventure Cemetery/Greenwich Section.
OBITUARY:
Mr. McGraw was born to Elijah and Melrose McGraw, Sr. on March 29, 1935. A lifelong resident of Savannah, he was a graduate of Alfred E. Beach High School and Savannah State University. He served four years in the United States Army and received a Master of Education degree from Georgia Southern University. He was an inductee of the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame and the Alfred E. Beach Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a dedicated educator who taught Physical Education and Science, served as Principal of Groves High School, Thompkins High School and Savannah High School as well as Director of the Adult Education Program. Mr. McGraw was a beloved and engaged member of Savannah’s civic community, an active member of St. Paul C.M.E church and served on the boards of several non-profit organizations.
Mr. McGraw was preceded in death by his father and mother; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Carter; a daughter, Mrs. Gail Grant and two stepdaughters; Ms. Phyllis Bartley Wooten and Ms. Gloria Bartley Brown. He is survived by his wife, Rose McGraw; a sister, Lizzie Warren of Philadelphia, PA; six daughters: Sandra Aikens, Sharon Aikens, Terri (Anthony) Phillips, Aquila McIntosh of Atlanta, GA, Kim (Lester) Ellerbe, and LaTrice McGraw; one son, Kevin McGraw; and two stepsons, Jagers (Marquita) Bartley and Wayne Bartley; two devoted friends: Marion “Shag” Dingle and Ephraim Sims; 25 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and four great
