Mr. Charlie James Heyward

July 30, 1933 — August 23, 2024

Savannah, Georgia

Mr. Charlie James Heyward, affectionately known to all as “Uncle Charlie,” was born on July 30, 1933, in Savannah, Georgia. He departed this world peacefully at his home on August 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Charlie's journey through life was one filled with service and creativity. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, a chapter of his life that fostered a sense of duty and commitment that he carried into everything he did. Following his military service, Charlie moved to New York City, where he worked for the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art for over 30 years. Throughout his time in New York, he developed a deep appreciation for the arts and culture, all while maintaining strong ties to his hometown.

A man of many passions, Uncle Charlie had an infectious love for Jazz music, which often filled his home and set the stage for gatherings with family and friends. With an exceptional talent for cooking, he was known for creating meals that brought people together. Fellowship was his joy; he found true happiness in the company of others, sharing laughter, stories, and those delicious meals that left lasting memories.

Charlie was not just a friend; he was a cherished member of every community he joined. His affectionate and kind spirit endeared him to everyone he encountered. He was a dedicated member of Saint Paul C.M.E. Church, where his warmth and faith enriched the lives of those around him.

Charlie Heyward was preceded in death by his mother Margaret Heyward, and siblings, Willie Reed Smart, John Finney and Eula May. Though they have moved on, their memories continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Charlie is survived by a host of family and friends, all of whom are irrevocably touched by the love and joy he shared. His gentle and caring nature will be profoundly missed, but his spirit will forever remain alive in the countless memories he created during his time with us.
