Mr. Moses Battey, 94, had his transition Sunday. March 29, 2009, at his residence in Savannah, Georgia, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.
Moses Battey was born January 25. 1915 to Isaac and Fannie White-Battey in Savannah, Georgia. The third born to this union, he attended the Rose Dhu School in Coffee Bluff in Savannah, Georgia.
After getting his education, he went to New York to pursue a career. At the age of seventeen, he joine the United States Army. He completed his tour and returned to Savannah. He decided after a short stay, he wanted to take up residence in New York City.
In the early 1940's, he went to Barber School in Manhattan. There he obtained his license and opened his own Tonsorial Shop at 8th Avenue and 123rd Street. He maintained that shop from approximately 1944 until his retirement in 1991, when he returned to Savannah.
His son, Nathaniel Battey preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories: son, Charles Battey; daughter, Barbara Gibbs; two grands: Jason Gibbs (Monai) and Bryant Gibbs, both os New York City; four great-grands: Camille Roddui, Tiarra Gibbs, JaKira Gibbs and Tahmaya, all of New York City; a devoted nephew, Ulysses Battey; a host of nieces, nephews, othe relatives and friends.
Funeral service: 2:30pm Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 1720 Staley Avenue, Savannah, Georgia, Pastor Joseph Hoze, Pastor/Presiding
Interment: Zion White Bluff Baptist Church Cemetery, 21 Lorwood Avenue, Savannah, Georgia with full Military Honors,
