Mavis Baker Jenkins

January 13, 1943 — January 19, 2009

Mrs. Mavis Louise Baker Jenkins entered this world on January 13, 1943 in Savannah, Georgia, to Ben and Mamie Mitchell Baker. Mavis was the youngest of eleven children.
At a early age Mavis was baptized as a confessed Christian at First African Baptist Church of East Savannah where she served on the Usher Board, Sang in the Junior and Senior Choir, and a member of what was then the""Young Matrons Auxiliary"" and now ""The Women Ministry"" and varoious other ministries of First African Baptist Church East Savannah. Sister Jenkins served faithfully at First African Baptist until she relocated to Hampton, Virginia. Mavis married Alexander Jenkins and of this union two daughters were born. While living in Hampton, Virginia. Mavis immediately found her a home with the church family of Queen Street Baptist Church, under the Pastoral ship of Pastor Anderson Clary.

Mavis attended school in Savannah, Georgia, where she graduated from high school at Alfred E. Beach High School, and attended Savannah State University where she earned a Associate Degree. She was for many years emplyed as an Administrative Assistant at Bethel AME Church of Hampton Virginia until her illness. This was a job she dearly loved.

Mavis was preceded in death by her father Benjamin Baker, Sr., her mother, Mamie Mitchell Baker, three brother, Herbert Shepard, Benjamin (Bennie) Baker, Jr. and Ernest Baker, Sr.

Mavis leaves to cherish her memories, her daughters Avis Jenkins of Tustin, California, Karmen Sylvia of Temple Hills, Maryland, her grandchildren, Shekinah Sylvia and Stephanie Sylvia. Four brothers, Reverend Henry H. (Doris) Baker of Darien, Georgia, Reverend Harold (Ruth) Baker of Savannah, Sylvester Baker, and Deacon Thermus & (Ruby) Baker of Fort Washington, Maryland, three sisters Mildred (Gilbert) Miller of Savannah, eorgia, Vivian (Hampton) Trigg of Dover Delaware, and Edna (McBrady) Andrews of East Point, Georgia. Her four aunts Ernestine Mitchell, of Savannah, Georgia, Mother Maggie Houston Baker of Savannah, Georgia, Francis Mitchell of Savannah, Georgia, and Juanita Mitchell of Savannah, Georgia, two Uncles, Deacon Leaster Mitchell of Savannah, Georgia and Robert Hunter of Savannah, Ga. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
