Mrs. Gladys Small, 92, had her transition Wednesday, November 26, 2008 under the excellent and professional care at Hospice Savannah, Inc. with her loving daughter at her side.
A native of Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, she moved to Savannah, Georgia at an early age, she was educated in the public schools system of Chatham County where she attended
East Broad Elementary School and Cuyler-Beach High School, graduatin in 1936. She then purused higher and attended Georgia State College (now Savannah State University) and received a BS Degree in Elementary Education.
Her career as a Teacher led her to teach in Jasper County, South Carolina, Darien, Georgia and Millen, Georgia and also as a Substitute Teacher in the Savannah Chatham County School Sysytem.
At a young age Sister Small was a faithful and dedicated member of Central Missionary Baptist Church (Hitch Village), under the Pastorate of Rev. J.S. Irby, where she was a Sunday School Teacher, sang in the Senior, Sanctuary Choirs member of the Senior Mission, Junior Mission, Young People Mission and The Lillian Brown Scholarship Fund,and the B.T.U. until her health began to fail.
After thirty years of teaching, she retired fron Todd Grant Elementary School in Darien Georgia.
Her husband, Leroy Small and her parents, Elijah Myers and Christine R. Dancy preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish and celebrate her memories: a devoted daughter, Jacquelyn (Greg) Pinkney of Savannah, GA; a loving sister, Lula Stafford; a loving and devoted aunt, Amelia R. Jones of Savannah, GA; two grands: Torrence Small and O-Myra Pinkney; two great-grands; a niece, Emily (Joseph) Johnson; a special cousin, who was like a daughter, Evelyn Warren; a host of nieces, nephews, other cousins, extended relatives, friends and the entire Central Missionary Baptist Church Family.
Funeral service: Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Central Missionary Baptist Church, 738 Hitch Drive (Hitch Village), Savannah, GA, Rev. Larry J. Stell, Pastor/Eulogist. Mrs. Small will lie in state Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the church until hour of service. Interment: Laurel Grove Cemetery-South, Savannah, GA.
