The Heavens are filled with stars. In their brightness, they light the pathways of darkness. ""Dotty"" was one of those special stars whose brightness touched the lives of others.
Dorothy Josphine Benton, 78, had her transition Thursday, October 9, 2008 at Hospice Savannah, Inc after a brief illness. She was born, March 19, 1930 to the late Charles Bennerson and Geneva Jordan in New York City. She was the fourth of five children. Dotty, as she was fondly called, graduated from Seward Park High School in New Yoek City. She retired from the New York Telephone Company and was a member of the renowned Apollo Theater Dancers. She danced in various night clubs in the tri-state area under the name""Charmaine""
On October 26, 1954, she was blessed with the birth of her son, Michael Anthony Albert. She was known for her class, dignity and style of dress. ""Dotty"" was an avid reader and a superb cook. She was well spoken and very articulate. To know her was to know her for her spandex pants and high heels. ""Dotty"" could often be seen walking alon Pennsylvania Avenue and Skidaway Road in her high heels. She loved music and was an extremely talented dancer. She was fun loving and always the life of the party.
Dotty was Preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Michael A. Albert, Sr.; three grandsons: Jamel (Ebony) Albert, Michael A. Albert, Jr. of Savannah, GA and Michael Albert of New York City; four granddaughthers: Taleesha (Kenny) Bland, Chantell Galloway, Michelle (Keith) Perrin, all of New York City and Dawn (Deon) Murray of Florida; eight great-grands; one sister, Vera Bell of New York City; one sister-in-law and a long time devoted ""daughter"" June Albert of Savannah, GA; one brother-in-law, Jay Sparks if Savannah, GA; two nieces: Rita and Lisa Murray; one grandniece, Michelle Blanchard, all of New York City; a host of other relatives and friends. Although she will be greatly missed, she'll never be forgotten.
Funeral service: Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Adams Funeral Services, Inc, 510 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, GA. Public viewing: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 from 9:00am - 8:00pm at the funeral home. Interment: Woodville Cametery, Roberts Street (West Savannah), Savannah, GA.
