Deacon Joe Lang

Adams announces the passing of Deacon Joe Henry Lang, 87, who transitioned on Friday, March 15, 2019 at Memorial Medical Center.

Deacon Joe H. Lang was born on March 27, 1931 in White Oak, Georgia to the late Manor D. Lang Sr. and Sarah L. Lang. He attended the public schools of Chatham County graduating from Beach-Cuyler High School in 1949, and graduated from Savannah State College in 1953 with a B.S. in Biology.

In 1955, he married the former Earnestine Hall and to this union three children were born. He was an active member of St. Luke Baptist Church for over 60 years, serving in several capacities such as: Superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday School teacher, the Trustee Board, and the Deacon Board. He was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture as a researcher, and served in that capacity for 33 years until his retirement in 1990. He came out of retirement and worked for Quest Diagnostics from 1993 to 2012. Everyone who knew Deacon Lang knew he loved his family and his golf. You could see the joy on his face at any family gathering or when he was on the golf course.

He was a 33rd Degree Mason, as well as a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 15, Prince Hall Masons Past Master, Ezra Consistory No. 27, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Past Commander-in-Chief, Omar Temple No. 21, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (Prince Hall Affliation), and St. Phillip’s Commandery No. 9, Royal Arch Masons. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and Falcon’s Incorporated. He served as the treasurer for the Savannah Branch NAACP for several years until his health began to fail him.

On March 15, 2019, God called Deacon Lang to his heavenly home. He was proceeded in death by four brothers: Manor D. Lang, Jr., Robert Lang, Sr., and Ravanell A. Lang, Sr., all of Savannah, GA, and James Lang of Jones, Georgia, and three sisters: Julia Crawford of New York, Gracie Lang and Lillian D. Gaines of Savannah, GA.

He leaves to cherish his memories three children: Jewel L. Lang, Gary J. Lang, and Karen(Lorraine) Johnson, all of Savannah; one granddaughter, Jordan Brianna Johnson; two sisters, Julia A. Holly of Jacksonville, FL., and Leona Lang of Savannah, GA; two brothers, John E. Lang of Clinton, IN, and Charles E. Lang of Savannah, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Adams announces funeral services for Deacon Joe Henry Lang which will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 23, 2019 at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church located 418 W. 38th St. Pastor Aaron Cummings.

Interment: Woodville Cemetery.
