Adams announces the passing of Dea. Herman Joseph Mack, 90, who transitioned on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Marshview Nursing Home.
Herman J Mack was born December 11, 1927 in Savannah, Ga. to the late Johnathan N. Mack and C. Ethel (Morell) Mack. He was the youngest of three children, predeceased by Ernestine W Lee and John E Mack. His son Herman Morell Mack preceded him in death at a young age.
He attended Paulson Elementary Street School and Beach-Cuyler High School in Savannah, Ga, graduating in 1945 with citations in mathematics and art. As the baseball pitcher for his school teams, he earned the nickname “Nunk”. After graduation, he attended City College in New York City, NY. He returned to Savannah and worked as a checker in the chemical division at International Paper for 42 years.
At a young age Herman began his relationship with the Lord, and served as a deacon at True Love Baptist Church of Savannah. Later, he joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member for several decades until his death. He served as chairman of the deacon board, assistant teacher for Sunday School and bible study, and was a member of the Brotherhood. For his dedication he was honored as man of the year twice.
He was passionate about baseball, bowling and fishing. He was a minor league left handed pitcher for the Savannah Braves with a shot at the major leagues until a shoulder injury ended that dream. He was an outstanding member of the Hi-Hat Bowling League of Savannah where he won many trophies. He continued bowling into his eighties, having been a member of the International Paper bowling team for decades. His other talents included calligraphy, singing, & woodworking. He was a 33rd degree mason of Prince Hall and a Shriner of Omar 21.
He leaves to cherish his memory a very devoted and loving wife of 30 years, Delores P. Mack; children Jacqueline Mack Williams (late Willie Williams, Jr), and Cassandra Washington (James) both of Atlanta, Ga; adopted daughter Charlesetta Collins Cummings (Robert) of Jacksonville, FL, Debbie Hagins (Greg) and Marva Gresham (Michael) both of Savannah, Ga; William Eric Phoenix (Nicole) of Pasadena, CA; A special family friend Angela Lowen; 14 grandchildren, 4 great grands and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday July 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, 624 Waters Ave, Rev. Chester A. Ellis, pastor. Interment Hillcrest Abbey East, 1600 Wheaton St.
