Deacon Joseph Williams

June 30, 1930 — March 30, 2009

Deacon Joseph Williams, 78, had his transition Monday, March 30, 2009 at Memorial Health University Medical Center, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

He gained his formal education in the schools of Chatham County. He was inducted into the military, serving in the Korean Conflict War. Corporal Williams received an honorable discharge for the United States Army.

As time went on, he became a Commerical Fishman. He met his wife of fifty-three and a half years, who encouraged him to confess Jesus as his Savior. In 1965, he was converted the baptized under the leadership of Pastor E. A. Capers and became a member of Wilmington Missionary Baptist Church. In 1968, Joseph was ordained and became Deacon of the Church. He saw a need for the Church and built a steeple to put on the Church. He joined the Usher Board later serving as President. Under the leadership of Pastor Wayne Rodgers, he joined the Senior Choir whom he loved to sing with; under the leadership of Pastor Louis Stell, III, he taught Bible Study and Sunday School; under the leadership of the late Pastor James A Brown, he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board; under the leader of Pastor Joey Horton, he served as Vice Chairman.

He was employed at Atlantic Industries Steel Plant for twenty-nine years as Plant Supervisor. After retiring, a few years later, he became employed at Goodwill Industries for ten years as Supervisor. He was Committee Chairman for Cub Scout Troop #284. He was instrumental in building the press box at Savannah State University and was a Trustee of Oak Grove Cemetery for many years. Deacon Williams was delighted in helping people.

When Deacon Williams made his transition at 5:00pm, he left his earthly home home for his Heavenly reward. His son, Rev. Joseph Mark Williams preceded him in death; three sisters: Sally Beatrice Allen, Catherine Green, Ellen Royal; four brothers: Albert Williams, Jr., Warren Williams, Eddie Williams, and Walter Williams (whereabouts unknown).

He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife, Cassie Meton Williams; sons: Richard (Donna) of Walthour, Mass, Tyrone of Silver Spring, Maryland and Walter of Thunderbolt, Georgia; daughters: Sharon of Boca Raton, Florida and Gail of Thunderbolt, Georgia; sister, Annie Kearse of Savannah, Georgia; grands: Joseph Mark, Joseph Dsjuan, Mark, Matthew, Joshua, Job, Tangeraneka,
Melinda, TaiMonique, Sarah (Jawara), Raechel, Rebecca, Sharon and Adrian; great-grands and God children; many nieces, nephews, family friends and loved ones.

Funeral service: 12:00 noon Monday, April 6, 2009 at Wilmington Missionary Baptist Church, 3321 Skidaway Road @ 52nd Street, Rev. Joey Horton, Pastor/Officiating. Public viewing: Sunday, April 5, 2009 from 12:00 noon to 7:00pm at Adams Funeral Services, Inc. Chapel, 510 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah, Georgia. Deacon Williams will lie in state at the church Monday from 9:00am until hour of service. Interment: Oak Grove Cemetery, 3321 Skidaway Road @ 52nd Street with full Military Honors.
