Deacon Nathan Simmons, Jr., 62, had his transition Saturday, March 05, 2016 at St. Joseph's Hospital surrounded by his loving family.


Funeral services for Deacon Nathan Simmons, Jr. will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church located 418 W. 38th St. Rev. Lexie Aiken, Pastor.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 P.M.-7:00 P.M., Friday, March 11, 2016 at Bethany Baptist Church located 2139 Margery St. Dr. Ronald B. Anderson, Pastor.


Interment: Magnolia Memorial Gardens.

OBITUARY:


Deacon Nathan ""Hammer"" Simmons, Jr. died on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at St Joseph-Candler Hospital after a brief illness.
Deacon Simmons was born on January 16, 1954, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Mr. Nathan Simmons, Sr. and the late Mrs. Jannie Lee Smith-Simmons
He attended the public schools of Chatham County and graduated from Sophronia Tompkins High School in 1972. He retired in 2004 from Chatham Area Transit Authority after 25 years of service. Prior to retiring, he was an entrepreneur in various businesses within the community. His favorite pastimes included fishing and singing with the Missionary Gospel Group as one of the lead singers.
During his youth, Deacon Simmons attended St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to Bethany Missionary Baptist church. On August 28, 1983, he was ordained as a deacon under the leadership of Pastor Frank Heyward. He currently was Chairman of the Deacon Board and a member of the Trustee Board. Moreover, he served in other capacities within the church.
Deacon Simmons was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Jannie Lee Simmons; two brothers: Billy Simmons and James Edward Simmons; and his sister-in-law, Johnnie Mae Simmons.
He is survived by a loving and devoted wife of 40 years, Minister Rosa M. Mobley-Simmons; and three sons, Khadim Muhammad (Rodney Cason) of Pensacola, Florida and Nathan Simmons 3rd and Jermaine (Dianna) Simmons, Sr., both of Savannah, Georgia. Also surviving are seven grandchildren Breyonna, Jermaine, Jr., Jamira, Nathan 4th , Christian, Kamilah, and Briana; one god daughter, Brya Thomas; one sister, Dr. Joan Simmons- Maynor of Savannah, Georgia; two god sisters, Missionary Barbara Green and Ann Sawyer, both of Savannah, Georgia; three sisters-in-law, Missionary Ella M. Mobley, Warnell Mobley, Melinda Frazier, all of Savannah, Georgia, and Mary Simmons of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; three brothers-in-law, Deacon Ernie Mobley, Minister Michael Frazier, and Frank Maynor, all of Savannah, Georgia; one aunt, Willie Lou Jones of Statesboro Georgia; mother-in-law, Mother Mattie Jinks - Mobley of Savannah, Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
