Mr. Edwin Miles Derry, 76, was born on September 30, 1932 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Miles and Eula Mae Derry in Ludowici, GA. He was preceded in death by sisters Louise D. Albright and Esther D. Jackson. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the St. James Baptist Church in Ludowici, GA where he served as a Deacon and on the finance board until his health began to fail. He then became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Groveland, GA as of 2003 where he served in the Deacon Ministry, laymen's ministry and served as Vive President #4. He sang in the Southern Sons Quartet for 20 years as lead singer.
He was educated in the Long County public school system. Upon graduation from High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After 14 months of service, he received an honorable discharge and afterward returning to Savannah, GA. When he returned to Savannah, GA he enrolled at Savannah State College now Savannah State University where he studied general woodworking and carpentry. Upon completion of his studies he entered the workforce working various places including Savannah State College, Standard Oil Company, Penn Waller Lumber Company and the Savannah College of Art and Design where he retired after 14 years of dedicated and faithful service.
After college he met and married Mae Catherine Moody and they were joined in holy matrimony. This union lasted 50 years until the Lord called him home on Friday January 23, 2009 at hospice Savannah.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Mae Catherine Derry; one daughter Patricia Williams son-in law Andrew Williams; two grandchildren, five sisters Dorthy (Robert), Beard of Washington D.C, Evelyn (Wilbur Sr.) Johnson of Ludowici, GA, Irene Thomas of St. Mary's GA, Reolure Pimpton of Los Angeles, CA, and Susie (Timothy) Hall of Denver,CO. A devoted mother-in law Altimese Moody of Pembroke, GA, one sister-in law Pearl Johnson of Philadelphia, PA and two brothers-in law Daniel (Evelena) Moody of Pembroke, GA and Carroll Jackson of Corona, NY. Two Goddaughters Gloria (Weldon) Williams and Brittany Mallard. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends, and his church family of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Visitation: Friday, January 30, 2009 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm at Adams Funeral Services Chapel. In state 10:00am until the hour of service. Funeral Service: Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church,Groveland, GA. Rev. Dr. L. Perry McNeal, Pastor. Internment: Church Cemetary
